Do you think my four gallon might be too small to cycle? It hasn't done anything for a month. I have 10 nitrates and had .25 nitrites for awhile but the ammonia hasn't really gone anywhere. I have never added unconditioned water and I put extra sponges in the two filters that are cycling in it right now. I added decor for more surface area, increased the temp, added ammonia so its at 4ppm... Is it normal for it to take so long? I added some of the filter media today to seed it from my VTs tank (I didn't do this when I set it up because he had had internal parasites). I was just wondering if its normal? Does it take awhile to "take off" you think? Sorry I am so full of questions.

Alright... I'll probably do an extra 50% the next few weeks to manually remove any toxins just in case the new cartridge doesn't take care of them. I usually do test a couple times a week on both of my males tanks. His tank has been at 0 ammonia and nitrites, but the other ones are not cycled so I usually just test his along with the other two. Plus, I have a fishless cycle running in a tank so I test daily on that one.

BTW, the black things in the cartridge is the carbon, right?

Well I have removed the decoration, and both cartridges didn't fit so I cut off the outside of the old cartridge and stuffed it in there behind the new one, and got rid of the black stuff on the inside (I rinsed it in treated water). I'll do another water change after I get back from the cat shelter. He's looking better quickly, though. This is a good sign :)

He's got to be at least two years old. I got him in december 2011 from Walmart full grown, and two be honest, he's not always been in the best conditions. I joined here a little less than two months ago, and before that he was in an unheated one gallon with not near enough water changes and cruddy food. He was even eating FD bloodworms for awhile as a staple because the dog ate his pellets (TetraBetta) and walmart was out.

Because of this, idk how long he will live, but he's definitely a trooper. At least he's in adequate conditions now. He now has NLS pellets, and a heated, filtered 5 gallon tank with regular water changes, and he does seem much happier.

I talked to OFL because she's done some studies on carbon... She said that it doesn't release toxins back into the water but it does become ineffective after awhile, so I was not too concerned about changing the cartridge because I was not trying to remove any meds or anything from the water.

Will the carbon remove anything the rust left behind? I'm afraid that that decoration was in there for a month and a half before I realized it had exposed metal. Do you think it'd be a good idea for me to do another 50% change as well as add another filter cartridge? He has been kind of losing color, and becoming kind of see-through.. But I had thought it was because of his age.

I took the decoration out last night during the water change and posted a thread asking about rust and what I should do now, but I didn't really get any replies so I just messaged you :p You and Sakura always have an answer for me, lol..

He already seems to be doing better as of today, though.

Oh, and I also have unused carbon filter cartridges. I also did a 50% water change. I think I can fit another cartridge in the filter with the current media because the tank is cycled...

There was a decoration in there that had metal sticking out. It was covered with paint so it looked like it was part of the decoration, but I noticed brown stuff on it... I took the decoration out and tried scrubbing it off and the paint came off and I realized it was metal. The decoration is not in the tank anymore, needless to say.

What does rust in a tank cause? Should I watch for any alarming signs or do anything to be extra cautious?

Yes, my VT had internal parasites awhile back.
My CT gets omega one pellets because the NLS are too small for him to find but he gets three a day, fasted yesterday and so far today.
