IDK about the info you got about leaching carbon, because I'd read a lot of studies where they do leach.. but maybe only happens with large ph shifts.

They do for sure start leaching phosphates though. How much depends on the carbon.

I don't know that carbon will be able to absorb all of it. A series of water changes is what I'd do. How old is he?

I talked to OFL because she's done some studies on carbon... She said that it doesn't release toxins back into the water but it does become ineffective after awhile, so I was not too concerned about changing the cartridge because I was not trying to remove any meds or anything from the water.

Will the carbon remove anything the rust left behind? I'm afraid that that decoration was in there for a month and a half before I realized it had exposed metal. Do you think it'd be a good idea for me to do another 50% change as well as add another filter cartridge? He has been kind of losing color, and becoming kind of see-through.. But I had thought it was because of his age.

I took the decoration out last night during the water change and posted a thread asking about rust and what I should do now, but I didn't really get any replies so I just messaged you :p You and Sakura always have an answer for me, lol..

He already seems to be doing better as of today, though.

Ewww yeah that can definitely cause issues. Glad you took it out. How's the fish that was in the tank with it?

Well.. I can't remember what filter you're using but carbon has to be replaced every 1-4 weeks (manufacturer should say how long the carbon lasts) and it's always goodto run two forms of media in your filter or else you restart your cycle every time you replace the cartridge. Then you should only replace one media at a time.

Oh, and I also have unused carbon filter cartridges. I also did a 50% water change. I think I can fit another cartridge in the filter with the current media because the tank is cycled...

There was a decoration in there that had metal sticking out. It was covered with paint so it looked like it was part of the decoration, but I noticed brown stuff on it... I took the decoration out and tried scrubbing it off and the paint came off and I realized it was metal. The decoration is not in the tank anymore, needless to say.

Well the only place you'll see rust is on the metal in the tank that is rusting, but once that rust happens it will release toxins into the water you won't be able to see with your eyes. Do you have metal in your tank?

What does rust in a tank cause? Should I watch for any alarming signs or do anything to be extra cautious?

Yes, my VT had internal parasites awhile back.
My CT gets omega one pellets because the NLS are too small for him to find but he gets three a day, fasted yesterday and so far today.

Remind me what and how much you're feeding?

Didn't one of your boys have parasites? or was that someone else..
