The fish do come in a box but they are double bagged and in a tight polystyrene box with loads of padding on the outside, it also has a 30 hour heat pack to keep them warm. My father works for Royal Mail and he was shocked that the fish survived, so it just proves how well packed up they are
I feed mine frozen bloodworms. He also gets snails that grow in my other tanks. They won't eat pellets or flakes. It has to be frozen or live. I don't think he was expensive. I think he was maybe 7 dollars? He was hard to find though. It took my Petco a couple months to get one in. They're not hard to look after but they do need a lot of plant cover, either real or silk. They're fun and really cute.
This is where I got my info on them when I was researching getting him:

LOL =] When I went to get my old betta Damein (R.i.p) the check out lady was like....Why don't you get one that won't die right away! Then i spent the next 15 minutes saying YES IM SURE I WANT HIM! Agh I hate shopping at petstores sometimes! lol :]
Wow! I really hate when people do that! =/ I've never kept my bettas with tankmates as I've always had to seperate them and It works much better if they are kept alone IMO! I'm glad Thor has a great owner now though! :]
thor is fine. He just has to put a bit more effort into swimming. his tank is next to my bed so i can watch how he is doing. i was soooooo angry when i bought him for two reasons. one because the lady in the shop said " i bet it will die" i felt like slapping her!! the other reasons was the lady said i was weird because i kept bettas in tanks by them selves. she was horrible
