What fin type is he and what is your pH/KH/GH readings
I wouldn't do 100% water changes in a filtered tank-not needed-twice weekly 50% should be enough to maintain water quality
When you use oak leaf they need to be removed and replaced once a week
Are you sure he is not tail biting-make a new thread and post a pic on the main board/forum

Hey Oldfishlady! I just need some advice. Ares' rays are still melting. It's been pretty bad recently. I think sooner or later, all his fins will be melted. I do daily 20% water changes and a 100% every week. He's in a filtered 2.5 gallon. I've already tried oak leaves, but it gets moldy and doesn't seem to work. I have aquarium salt, too, but I'm not using it. Thanks!

    I PM'd you some pics......
I don't use just sand only about 1 inch on top of the soil to hold it down-I don't use or need root tabs-but with just sand I would use root tabs. I get my sand at walmart for $4/50# play sand for kids sand box.

When I use kitty litter I mix it 25% litter and 75% soil-if I use peat- I only use a hand full at most dusted on the bottom under the soil
Kitty litter can be a mess when used 100%-you also need to make sure it is just clay and not any of the perfumed type or with any additives or it will kill the fish-the wal-mart red bag brand is what I used-how it is made from one state to another can vary too so look at what is in it
Personally I would stick to dirt or potting soil and only add a handful of the clay kitty litter for the iron.
