I understand.....I just wish fish shops would stop selling these species of fish...its not fair to you or the fish....people don't know and they are not informed that a cute little 1in fish will one day be well over 2 feet....they trust the pet shop....I did too...so you are not alone......but the pet shop should post a giant sign...this fish will be 2+ feet when fully grown...but do they- NO...its all about money to them....sad......

I know but I have nothing else I can do . I cannot simply get rid of it. I have nowhere where the fish can go. I simply dont have the space or money. What can I do?

I am sure you know this already...but you are going to have some problems in the near future with your stocking...beside the ghost knife or tank buster.....clown loaches get really big too-another tank buster and like to be in groups...good that you are adding to your schooling fish....but 23g two of your species really need to be re-homed within 6mo-1yr......with this stocking-you may need to make twice weekly 50% water changes even with plants...good luck.....
When big fish are placed in too small a tank-they stunt-the body may stop growing to a degree- but the internal organs do not and soon they will start to suffer

The tank is 23 us gallons. I am moving the fish up from a smaller tank. I have a mix "n" match of fish . I have 1 danio (getting more.) 2 Harliequins (cant spell , getting more) 1 clown Loach . 1 Ghost Knife fish (I know it will get huge , but my mom is in love with it and we have had it 2 years and its very small ,it has a deformed fin , could this slow the growth period down?)

How big is the tank and what kind of fish?...feed light at first...even every other day to start so you don't stress the tank and once the plants start to actively grow they should take care of the water....

Awesome...when I set up a new NPT I add livestock the same day-usually after multi water only changes to get the water clear.
If it has been 24h since you set it up you may want to make a 25-50% water only change first and then add the fish...monitor and make needed water only changes until the plants start to actively grow-the number, volume, frequency of these water change needs are based on tank size and bioload (number of fish and livestock added) until the plants can keep up with them to keep the water quality safe.

Hey oldfishlady ;) I have used to the topsoil method like you do and I must say im so happy with it. I had no cloudlynesn or nothing and now its all planted about 80 % of the tank is planted. So I was thinking would it be ok to add fish tomorrow?
