Theres no fish in the tank atm, scared to use it, but buying gallon after gallon of spring while this cycles would be horrible. BTW the iron lvl in my tap is ferous iron and its 1.5mg/l and theres also tannins in the well apparently, so its pretty ugly once it sits. I use prime and AP crystal clear (because the crystal clear seems to make the iron clump a bit and sink) But yes my question is about the rainwater, id hate all this effort go to waste but i imagine if its pollen it may eventually rot and raise ammonia?

Hi OFL :) I had a question, i bought a 10g tank and decided id use rainwater/tap water since my tap has high iron levels. I caught the rain today from the middle of my yard (which is covered by trees, everywhere is lol) and the water looked clear until i jugged it then i could see a bit of a yellow tint to the water, figuring the activated charcoal filter would probobly take care of it and it looked better then my tap i put it in the tank, only to see that in that amount it looks orange. We dont get much rain in FL but weve got a rainy week ahead so i was hoping to jug up quite a few gallons during it, even bought kids pools for the purpose, but not sure why its orange/yellow. Finding a spot that doesnt have oak/palm trees is quite difficult so im thinking maybe its pollen? Or tannins? Im just not sure. Ive read you gather rainwater for your tanks sometimes so i wanted your input.

He is fine, but he is looking paler than usual. I think it is mid age stuff. He is older now.

    Hey OFL,

Could you take a look at my post about my injured female?
I've treated her with some aquarium salt and a bit of "wound-ease" but I'm not sure if that is the way to be going about it.
It won't let me post the link here, but it's in Diseases and Emergencies and is titled "Hmm... Hutch's interesting injury" or something like that.
    Thank you!

    Thanks!

Tannins-either IAL or dried oak leaf...I use oak leaf 10-12 crushed per gallon in my pre-mix treatment water
I feed fresh garlic to all my fish daily since it is part of my homemade food I make...long term feeding of fresh garlic can help boost immune response and control internal parasites in my experience.....

Oh, sounds strange but what if you could make some sort of home-made medicine for it from garlic? Idk... =/

Popeye...QT in a small container-maintain temp 76-77F- and start 100% daily water changes with pre-mixed Epsom salt 2-3tsp/gal and tannins for 10-14 days...it can take 4-5 days before you see reduction of the edema...the combo of the tannins and Epsom salt antibacterial/fungal properties should take care of it....
