Tail/fin biters can be so frustrating and often we can never figure out the triggers or get them to stop....Post on the main board with pic and get more ideas from our members that have a lot of personal experience dealing with issues like this.

Hi. I'm pretty sure he's fin nipping now. I had him in a smaller tank with salt water with absolutely nothing he could tear his fins on, I come home, and there are more flayed parts of his tail gone and a long split down the middle. Is there anything I can do?

It depends....on what caused the hole....usually it doesn't mean anything real bad and often it will be due to something you have no control over without causing more problems in other areas. Maintain water quality and good nutrition-If you have a tannin source add this to help toughen fins/scales.

What if just now, I suddenly noticed a hole in his tail. Is that a problem?

Sudden missing chunks are almost always tail biting....

I'm sorry to bother you again! I took your advice and I have to say, Lapis was doing great, but just an hour ago, I turned and looked at him and a whole chunk of his tail was gone! I don't think it's fin rot, and he may have torn his fins on something or even tail nipping himself. I have no idea. Please help! I uploaded new pictures in my album of his tail.

Sorry for all the trouble, but I finally managed to get the album to work. The more recent pictures of him are now up in the album.
