I have used oak, hickory, pecan and a few other hard woods in my tanks for my driftwood that I found out in my woods/back pasture and even a pretty cool piece I found in my fire wood stack. I have never had any problems and do try to find as dry as wood as I can that has naturally de-barked-but I have de-barked them myself and used some with a bit of bark still on them without any problems. The plecos love might have to weigh it down for a while...I still get tannin but I don't worry too much about it and some wood will get a white fungus that will resolve on its own....

Have you ever used an oak branch in your tanks? I have a piece off of a tree that died in last years drought (i live in texas) i have removed all the bark (took me forever!) And let it soak in boiling water but want to make sure its safe to put in the tank.
