I have used the Quikrete brand of both pool filter and play sand for my cap over the soil in my NPT's without any problems.....Most of the sands are inert and safe to use regardless of brand.

The Amazon sword will out grow a 100gal tank in get huge with an even bigger root system, however, they grow slow and a small sword in a 10 or 20gal will be fine...maybe 3-5 years-depending on the nutrients in the soil.....I keep mine in check by pinching the larger leaves on a regular basis...It should be fine in your 20gal NPT for awhile at least....Be sure to keep the crown above the substrate when you plant it...better too shallow than too deep.....also, trim the roots before you plant it too....

Hey OFL! I had a question, would a 20 gal tank be too smal for amazon swords? I am planning on doing a NPT with my 20 gal and I have been told it is good or too small and I figured you would give me the BEST knowledge on the subject

The pool filter sand I use-I got at Home depot Quikrete 50lb bag for under $8.00.

I also buy the 50lb bags of the small diameter pea type gravel from Home Depot or Lowes that I use in my aquarium-its a natural collect rock used for landscaping/gardens-Is inert so it doesn't change water prams-you just want to watch out for dyed rocks and rock that can change water prams...

Hey Oldfishlady! I was wondering what type or brand of pool filter sand do you use as your substrate? Do you know of any gravel/rocks that I could use if I wanted to avoid sand? I just wanted to ask because I wanted to see of anything you can use other than aquarium designated gravel that would be cheaper to buy. Thanks!
