Eric
How old are you?
mid 30s
What is your location?
Colorado Springs, CO USA.
What is your occupation?
Currently tech support, but I've accepted a position doing Quality Assurance. My background is in computer programming and I still work with the technologies. Currently I am doing Java code support and will be doing Java development for automation in the next job.
How did you choose your user name?
My userid starts from my nickname in college, I did a lot of Viking research, so people called me Leif as in Leif Erickson. When I was participating on a Role Playing forum, my person was that of a rabbit, hence LeifTheBunny.
My Fish Keeping When and how did you become involved in fish keeping?
As a child living in Okinawa, my parents attempted to keep fish, but were never really successful. I had wanted to try getting back into keeping fish and after visiting the Denver Aquarium earlier this year I just decided to go for it. I had been trying to hold off until I got the basement finished, but the way the builder built the basement, this might not even be feasible.
What kind of fish do you currently keep?
Right now, only freshwater, though I'm looking at doing a reef tank.
What kind of setup?
I've got three large tanks with stands and canopies, while the other 4 are small, self contained eclipses. I like the planted tanks, so all but one are planted.
What was your most challenging fish keeping experience?
My South American Cichlid tank, it seems that every time I introduce a new pair of fish to the tank, someone gets upset, so it's been fairly difficult to find that balance.
What advice would you like to share with the FishForum community?
Never stop learning. There's always something new to learn about the fish and the tanks.
What would be your dream tank?
A 210g reef tank with bamboo sharks.
What do your friends/family think of your hobby?
Most have been pretty supportive. My parents like the tanks because they were never able to keep the fish very long.
Do you name your fish? If so, what are some of the names?
Only my bettas, more to hassle my girlfriend. I named the first Acorn after Acorn the Dwarf from the 10th Kingdom. Betta #2 was named Walnut in keeping with the nut motif. I was arranging to get a third betta which I pre-named Buckeye, but had to hold off in getting it when I decided to re-allocate the tank to a different group of fish.
What fish have you had the longest?
Part of my school of cherry barbs in my 90g community tank. Several of them are recent additions as I decided to increase the school size.
What is your favorite fish of all time?
Hard choice. I really like South American Cichlids, specially Blue Rams. They are pretty, intelligent, and like to watch me while I watch them. But the same can be said about the Bettas.
One a scale of one through ten, how would you rate your interest in fish keeping? (1=I hate fish, 10=Completely and hopelessly obsessed)
I'd say 9, some of my friends would likely say 13 or so.
How did you discover the Fish Forum at FishForum.com?
Before I got my first tank, I tried to do as much research online as possible as well as buying some books on the subject. I would read through the site and decided to join because of the friendly atmosphere.
