Member Showcase Questions:

What is your real first name?
I don't believe in posting my name up in the big inter web ;)

Where are you located?
New York City

What is your occupation?.
AD designer

How did you choose your user name?
My username came from a strange combo of japanese words.
Ao= blue
Okashi= cookie

My Fish Keeping experience:

When and how did you become involved in fish keeping?
Hmmm... I suddenly wanted an aquatic plant one cold winter day in '11 to decorate a pretty vase. Then I wanted a pretty fish to decorate the plant...

How did you discover the Fish Forum at TropicalFishkeeping.com?
Huh.... I found bettafish.com first :) two years ago I bought my very first betta in hopes that it will help fertilize my anubias. After some quick internet googling I realized that fish keeping is more work than i ever signed up for :/
I lurked for a while at bettafish.com before finally deciding to join the forum :)

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
Right now I'm keeping three Hara Jerdonis, a school of pygmy cories and an endler

What size tanks and setups do you have?
I have small tanks of carting sizes, ranging from 1 gallon - 4 gallons. I have a paranoia of gallons of water spilling in my apartment.... I guess that makes me a rather awkward hobbyist

What would be your dream tank?
The perfect 1 gallon cube. Planted and scaped. I haven't found the tank yet >.>

Do you name your fish? If so, what are some of the names?
I've named my betta...
Recently I've started calling my hara jerdonis Spot, dot and yellow to help differentiate between fish. Spot has a large clear spot on his caudal, Dot has a small clear dot on his caudal. yellow is slightly yellow with no dots in the caudal.

What is your favorite fish?
Right now, it would be a couple of the micro fellows. Dario darios have gotten me really fascinated recently.

What was your most challenging fish keeping experience?
I've never went for hard to keep fish... I guess my hardest challenge was to keep shrimps alive in summer. My room does not have AC and the water gets to 100F. My breeding colony of various shrimp slowly died off until there was just one left by the end of summer :(

What advice would you like to share with the Tropical Fish Keeping
community?
This is advice I give to myself... Keep learning and don't give up. There is always more stuff to learn in this hobby. Frankly, it's impossible to fully understand the whys and hows of every organic and inorganic processes that are making our aquariums work the way they do. Unhappy things also happen... don't let that kill your passion :)

Other Stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
I like to draw, although I seem to have less time for such things recently.
I also love to sleep ;)

Do you keep any other pets?
nope

What are your favorite bands/type of music?
It varies. Usually you can catch me listening to OSTs from awesome movies....

What are a few of your favorite films?
I love watching movies at the theatre! No favorites yet!

What are your favorite TV shows?
Ahaha... I don't even own a television set :(

What are a few of your favorite books?

What is your favorite food?
Right now, it's crawfish.

What are your pet peeves?
That hollow slurping/ sucking snort like sound that people make when they sniff using the back of their nose :/

What is REALLY important to you?
My family, staying healthy, and being kind to others.

What is your favorite silly quote?
"May your nose hair grow long and white"

Anything else that you'd like to share?
I'm glad I found this hobby, I really am. I love being able to learn something new about it almost every day and being able to talk with fellow hobbyists about new discoveries

About me:

What is your real first name?
Sharon

Where are you located?
I live in the GTA. That's the "Greater Toronto Area", it's in Canada EH?

What is your occupation?
Seamstress, Embroidery, Self-Employed

How did you choose your forum user name?
I started off as "Jakiebabie" which is a nickname of our Mini Schnauzer "JAKE"… but it didn't sound very official as time went on and everyone called me Jackie which is wrong. I discovered that my 2 favorite things… fish and horses could come together in a name that wasn't being used! So I asked for a change!

My Fish Keeping Experience:

When and how did you become involved in fish keeping?
I was probably about 8 yrs old when we got our first 20 gallon tank. Mom hated the snails and algae but my siblings were allergic to feathers and fur so "Fish it is!". I was hooked! I found a turtle hatch-ling while riding my bike to swimming lessons. It was no where near any water and was in fact crawling along the sidewalk and I almost ran it over with my bike. (Somehow... I was allowed to keep it!!)

How did you discover this fish forum?
I was Googling stuff on my fish species and signed up on several sites but I just didn't feel welcome on any of them. TFK was warm and friendly!! Eventually I stopped visiting all the other sites. Once I settled in, even tho I knew NOTHING and had been keeping fish the wrong way all this time... I learned and began helping others. I was totally surprised to be asked to be a Mod!

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
I currently have Boesemani Rainbowfish, Neon Swordtails, Congo Tetras in my 75 Gallon and 3 young male Honey Gourami in my 10 QT tank.

What size tanks and setups do you have?
75 Gallon Fully planted… but I'm a lazy keeper!! I cannot seem to stay on any kind of schedule. For that reason I am not ready to try SW.

What would be your dream tank?
A 125 Gallon SW Reef… but the only place in my living room for it has NO support under that part of the floor. The house was built in 1885!

Do you name your fish? If so, what are some of the names?
Once in awhile I do… not sure why… My Betta I did… occasionally I have a "favorite" and will name it. "Honey Ro" and "Blue" (SIP) in my Avatar Pic and "Fishbert" (SIP) my Crowntail Betta.

What is your favorite fish?
Turq Rainbowfish… but I have trouble keeping them alive. I have a fondness for Oscars too.

What was your most challenging fish keeping experience?
As a teenager my tank sprung a leak and we didn't have the money for a new tank… I kept my 5-6 goldfish in an old metal wash pan with an air hose on my bedroom floor. You know the kind… white enamel over metal, with a red painted rim… (all our grand parents had them to wash laundry in them). Even tho I covered them with a board the Goldfish kept jumping out. I was able to revive them most of the time so I did learn that fish can recover even when semi-died up and fuzzy.

What advice would you like to share with the forum community?
Buy and keep your fish in the BIGGEST TANK YOU CAN AFFORD! Take it SLOW. Don't change too many things at one time.

Other Stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
TFK… yes TFK is my hobby! I'm a volunteer! I used to Horseback ride & jump and won the occasional ribbon.

Do you keep any other pets?
The family is pet obsessed. Right now we have 1 large Goldfish that needs a pond… and a handicapped turtle, 2 dogs… Dillon (Wire Haired Fox Terrier… smart as a whip! 5 years old) and Jake (Mini-Schnauzer 11 years old) My grand babies are a F/Husky, a M/Coon Hound, a M/Lab cross. Photos are in my Profile Albums. Feel free to visit! Daughter has 2 birds and a cat as well. (We used to have 8 cats at one time!)

What are your favorite bands/type of music?
Hip Hop and crank it up loud! Eminem, Rihanna, Kanye...

What are a few of your favorite films?
PS… I Love You, The Notebook and The Vow. Ya I know... Mushy stuff!!

What are your pet peeves?
Commercials, (I PVR everything!!), Product packaging that is wasteful!!, "Housewives" TV of ANY county/state or city and false advertising. Oh ya... and what is with the camera men these days on TV shows? Stand still and be good at your craft or I won't watch the show.

What are a few of your favorite TV shows?
Big Bang Theory, Ellen, Grey's Anatomy, Vikings and Sons of Anarchy and Survivor.

What are a few of your favorite books?
The OUTLANDER Series (Jamie and Claire) by Dianna Gabaldon, omg coming to a mini series Summer 2014... Squeeeeeee!! I haven't read much else! I think we're waiting on book 8 coming this summer!!

What is your favorite food?
T-bone Steak and potatoes any day!! My husband brings home a hunk of meat and flowers together. I'm Wheat free.

What is REALLY important to you?
You always have an effect on the people with whom you come in contact! It really doesn't take much to make someone's day.
BE KIND!!

What is your favorite silly quote?
I like ROAK (Random Acts of Kindness) and "Pay it forward". Silly? : "The crazy cat lady starter kit." I'm kinda tired of hearing daily, "...at the end of the day,..."!!... it's way overused.

Anything else you'd like to share?
I learned to horse back ride at 40. You can do anything you set your mind to at any age! I competed at the "schooling" level and earned a couple of 1st place ribbons. I learned to jump with no reins and no stirrups! I have also taken 2 horseback riding tours with my husband who also rides: A 6 day trek of Ireland and a 5 day trek of Tuscany, Italy! I haven't ridden in a couple of years. My budget won't allow for it, but I do miss it!

About Me:

What is your real first name?
Roberta

Where are you located?
Southern NH, USA

What is your occupation?
Finance Officer

How did you choose your forum user name?
Old nickname stemming from Roberta & Mad Dog :)

My Fishkeeping experience:

When & how did you become involved in fishkeeping?
I had mentioned to my boyfriend (now husband since August 2013) that I'd like to have a fish tank again at some point in time and that following Christmas, he surprised me with a 45 gal. hex. tank with everything needed to set it up.

How did you discover this fish forum?
I'm pretty sure it was while searching for a solution to getting rid of ammonia because my tank would not cycle after 2 or 3 months. Eventually came to find out that my bf washed the inside of the tank with glass cleaner while the gravel was in the tank. He thought he was doing me a favor. Doh!!

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
Boesmani rainbows , corys, tiger barbs, emperor tetras, bettas

What size tanks and setups do you have?
(1) Freshwater 75 gallon, (1) 10 gal. quarantine, (2) 5 gal betta tanks, (4) 2.5 gal. betta tanks

What is your dream tank?
150 gallon discus tank or same size saltwater. Haven't ventured into the salty world yet.

Do you name your fish? If so, what are their names.
Just the bettas. I did have 4 tiger barbs that I named John, Paul, George, & Ringo but they're no longer with me :( My betta's names are Badda Bing, Bumbo, Boo, Bazinga, Bosox, & Blackie. For some reason I stuck with "B" names after my first boy Baccus.

What is your favorite fish?
Mandarin fish are pretty amazing. Others would be Bettas, Discus and Tangs.

What was your most challenging fishkeeping experience?
I'm going to refer back to the ammonia issue under "How did you discover the forum question" as my number one challenge. Another big challenge was when we were moving to NH - the last thing to get packed up were the fish. I had already set up a new tank (the 75 gallon) here since I needed to upgrade anyway. Petco was nice enough to give me a huge shipping box to pack them in and after about 1-1/2 hours I finally had all of them in the shipping box. When we went to put the box on the truck, it was leaking pretty badly. I had to find buckets to transport 20 something fish in since it was close to midnight and no way to get any other type of containers. I can't believe they all survived under all that stress and a long ride sloshing around in the back seat of my car.

What advice would you like to share with the forum community?
Be faithful with your water changes and feed your fish a well balanced diet with the best food possible.

Other stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
Reading, traveling, and cooking. I'm trying to become a better gardener.

Do you keep any other pets?
Sadly no. I wold love a few dogs but I'm not home enough during the week and it wouldn't be fair to them.

What are your favorite bands/type of music?
Aging punk rocker here :) I'm an 80's & 90's alternative fan but I do tend to like a lot of different types of music. Beatles, Clash, Cure, David Bowie, Queen, Coldplay, Ramones. And when I hear Andrea Bocelli sing Nessun Dorma in concert it reduces me to tears.

What are a few of your favorite films?
Anything by Quentin Tarantino or Woody Allen. I like the offbeat independent films but not exclusively. As long as it has a good story line and/or makes you think a little, I'm there.

What are your favorite TV shows?
Game of Thrones, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Antiques Roadshow, Sons of Anarchy, Ink Master, Top Chef.

What are a few of your favorite books?
Ugh! I really can't pick just a few. I'm one of those people who read more than one book at a time. Some of my favs: Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden by Steinbeck, Dark Tower series and The Stand by Stephen King,The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, The Agony & the Ecstasy by Irving Stone, A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.

What is your favorite food?
Lobster!! And good homemade Italian food.

What are your pet peeves?
I'm part of the rat race in Boston during the week and there's nothing more annoying than people who have their face in their phones and smack into everyone around them. And people who talk loudly on their phones in a packed train. We really don't need to hear about your personal life folks. To a lesser extent, I have to put the toilet paper roll on the RIGHT way (end sheet facing out) and will change it at your house if it's on backwards :)

What is REALLY important to you?
The obvious answer is family and while that's true, I find it important to keep things in perspective and try not to sweat the small stuff. I lost one of my best friends at a young age to breast cancer. Her death really changed my life. No matter how terribly she was suffering, she always had a smile on her face when I came to visit. She never felt sorry for herself or complained. From that time on, when I think I'm having a bad day, I think of her and tell myself that compared to that, my issues are completely insignificant. There is always going to be someone having a worse day than me.
And it's important to be kind & compassionate.

What is your favorite silly quote?
Life is a bowl of cereal

Anything else that you'd like to share?
I try not to "overpost" on the forum and let the members do the talking but I'm always lurking in your threads. Insert evil laugh here _______.
And we really work hard as a team.

wake49

About Me:

What is your real first name?
Jeff. My mother told me it means "God's Peace", but others will tell you differently...

Where are you located? -
Connecticut, USA.

What is your occupation? -
Right now I work as a salesman at a lumber company, but I recently graduated with my Accounting and Business degrees, so I am thinking of a radical change...

How did you choose your forum user name? -
Wakefield, a knuckleballer that pitched for the Red Sox from 1995-2011 was number 49 and my favorite player. Hence - wake49

My Fishkeeping experience:

When & how did you become involved in fishkeeping?
- I kept a goldfish tank (with a betta in it, gasp!) when I was a youngun, like ten or smething. I had that tank for a few years until it was empty. When I met my current wife (back in 2008) she really wanted a fish tank in the house but didn't want to do any of the work, so guess who took it over...

How did you discover this fish forum?
- I Googled "How much and do I need in my Reef Tank? The rest is history...

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
- I have Neons and Platys in a 20 gallon "kitsch" tank I started for my son and a dottyback and crabs and corals in my 30 gallon salty tank (I go slowly with adding fish to this tank. Usually one or two every few months).

What size tanks and setups do you have?
- Right now a 20 gallon FW with Tetras and Platys. Mostly kitsch and gravel, HOB filtration and fishies. I want to upgrade it to a 29 gallon tall and plant it. I also have a 30 gallon Coral Reef tank with a few corals and a dottyback, live rock and live sand.

What would be your dream tank?
- I would love a 180 gallon tank to house a Stars & Stripes Puffer as my centerpiece fish.

Do you name your fish? If so, what are their names?
- no naming here. I call them out by common name.

What is your favorite fish?
- Desjardini Sailfin Tang.

What was your most challenging fishkeeping experience?
- Losing a 150 gallon Reef Tank to coral nuclear warfare.

What advice would you like to share with the forum community?
- Research. And when you are done, research some more.

Other stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
- My wife would laugh at this one. She says that everything I do is a hobby, and I have way too many of them... I have "interests" (lol), such as: collecting Mechanical Mickey Mouse watches, working on house, softball, golf, playing the drums and playing guitar. I also just dove into writing a fiction novel. We will see how that goes...

Do you keep any other pets?
- We have two rescue dogs, two rescue cats and two cockatiels.

What are your favorite bands/type of music?
- My all-time favorites are tied between Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. I don't really have a favorite "type" of music. I will listen to it all. My iPod has: Johnny Cash, Toby Keith, Scandal, Iron Maiden, AFI, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Men at Work, Zeppelin, The Beatles and Mindless Self Indulgence...to name a few.

What are a few of your favorite films?
- Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, The Princess Bride and Spaceballs.

What are your favorite TV shows?
- Right now, The Following. Love it. I am also glued to watching Breaking Bad right now.

What are a few of your favorite books?
- 1984 is my absolute favorite book of all time. From high school until now I have read that book at least a dozen times. Others include Catch 22, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, I just finished the Hunger Games Trilogy... It's kind of hard to list everything I liked here...

What is your favorite food?
- Turkish. I love a good falafel.

What are your pet peeves?
- People that stand in doorways. It drives me nuts. I mean there is more roomy square footage to occupy away from the door, and you aren't blocking people's way through...

What is REALLY important to you?
- My family. I love them.

What is your favorite silly quote?
- Jeff Passan (a Yahoo! sports ananlyst) said: Why is it that anything beginning with “Back when I was a kid” always ends with an absurd statement?

How did you choose your forum user name?
My initial; I - N - DJO

My Fishkeeping experiences:

When & how did you become involved in fishkeeping?
I got hooked after a friend introduced me to bettas in the mid 70's

How did you discover this fish forum?
Google - researching crayfish. I found a post on crayfish, then read other posts/topics and felt comfortable with the atmosphere. I found Bettafish.com separately and was interested in water cycling, later found out they were one source.

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
My main interest may change, but I always have bettas. Currently I only have bettas, guppies, crayfish, and a common catfish.

What size tanks and setups do you have?
I don't have "proper" set ups. But I do have small 1g tanks to 2 x 1.5 x 0.5m pond.

What is your dream tank?
Dream? . . . a gigantic "wall tank", viewable from both sides/rooms. AND a pond that goes under the house floor.

Do you name your fish? If so, what are their names?
Not really. Sometimes I call them by color - bluey - blacky - etc.

What is your favorite fish?
Betta splendens

What was your most challenging fishkeeping experience?
In terms of fish keeping - goldfish. Back then I didn't understand anything about water nor disease thus keep losing them. But in terms of breeding - bettas. I often need to tweak breeding methods to accommodate individual characters. And fry raising is always a challenge.

What advice would you like to share with the forum community?
DO NOT learn fish keeping the hard way. Research, research and research then acknowledge your limits before deciding what to jump into.

Other stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
Breeding - whether fish, birds, or what ever pets I keep. Fishing in nature (not in fishing ponds). Carpentry (once upon a time)

What are a few of your favorite films?
No specific favorite - maybe space related technology like the first Star Wars movie, Transformer.

I don’t like reading. Out of the few I’ve read at school – “Animal Farm” and “The Old Man And The Sea”

What is your favorite food?

What are your pet peeves?
Not really sure. Too many to mention

What is REALLY important to you?
. . . My sanity??? . . . . Family . . . . Son

What is your favorite silly quote?
Forgot . . .

Tazman

About Me:

What is your real first name?
Neil

Where are you located?
Hudson, Quebec, (near Montreal)

What is your occupation?
Chef

How did you choose your forum user name?
I have had it for years since I was living in the South Pacific and could apparently do a good Taz (cartoon character impression)

My Fishkeeping experience:

When & how did you become involved in fishkeeping?
Over 20 years ago almost, I started with a goldfish that I won at a fairground ride, it didnt last very long as I had no clue how to keep it. I then started researching and started keeping African Cichlids as well as a professionally maintained Saltwater tank when living in the South Pacific.

How did you discover this fish forum?
Google, dont actually remember what for now but I liked the forum and the posts, my area of expertise is Cichlids so I was posting a lot in there. I was asked to be a Moderator which was an added bonus of staying on the site.

What kind of fish do you currently keep?
I currently have Cichlids with Yellow Labs, Acei, Afra, Rusty, Placidochromis Milomo and my BN pleco and also Saltwater Clownfish, Chromis, Talbot Damsel, Watchman Goby along with snails and hermit crabs.

What size tanks and setups do you have?
75 Gallon Cichlid tank, 55g Saltwater tank and a 220g waiting to be setup as a mixed Reef tank.

What would be your dream tank?
If money and space were no object, a 2500g+ shark and predator Saltwater tank, more realistically, the 220g that I have running as a stocked mixed reef with corals and amazing fish.

Do you name your fish? If so, what are their names?
Usually a few, I had a huge female Oscar years ago, who I called Big Mamma, sometimes its names that cannot be written here

What is your favorite fish?
The discus which I kept years ago, they just drifted around, so calming and relaxing watching them.

What was your most challenging fishkeeping experience?
Several years ago I had a very aggressive 180g cichlid tank, I kept having to remove fish that simply didnt get along, then I changed the tank over to an all male tank, which again involved removing fish constantly that didnt get along until I found a good balance that worked.

What advice would you like to share with the forum community?
Nothing happens fast particularly if you start a saltwater tank, take it slow and RESEARCH, RESEARCH and RESEARCH some more before ever buying fish. Buying a fish on a whim and then finding out it doesnt work and the store wont take it back is NOT good fish keeping.

Other stuff about me:

What are your other hobbies?
Astronomy (although not such now, its a bit cold in Canada during winter, Fishing (catch and release unless I cant save the fish and its edible), Computers, Cooking (being a chef, I like to attempt things and see what I can put together sometimes.

Do you keep any other pets?
I have a cat called Squeekers, she cant meow properly, so hence the name. Technically not a pet, but I do look after my bosses German Shepherd occasionally.

What are your favorite bands/type of music?
Anything really, apart from Hip Hop and Gangsta Rap, I used to be a roadie in a previous life before I came to Canada, so heard all sorts of different music.

What are a few of your favorite films?
Les Miserables, Titanic equally.

What are your favorite TV shows?
Big Bang Theory, Various fishing shows on World Fishing Network

What are a few of your favorite books?
I dont have a lot of time to read but when I do, I like fiction, informational books such as Fish Keeping books and Astronomy

What is your favorite food?
Chinese

What are your pet peeves?
Annoying TV commercials, I hate getting into a show and then it stops for x amount of minutes for commercials for stuff I will never likely buy, customers who complain to our waitresses over really minor things and then refuse to leave a tip for them at the end of the night. They are doing you a service, treat them nice!

What is REALLY important to you?
I strive to do my best every day, helping people when I can and I do donate to certain charities.

What is your favorite silly quote?
"Be true to your teeth or they will be false to you"

Anything else that you'd like to share?
Think Positive, be yourself and treat others how you would like to be treated. There is no point putting on a show to impress someone, be it a potential partner or employer, they want to see YOU not a screen hiding who you really are. Think Positive and good things DO happen, it might take time, dont dwell on the bad, look forward. What is in the past cannot be changed, so move on and live life to the fullest.
