I am from Hillsborough County, FL where they raise most of the tropical fish here in the USA & have had aquarium fish since I was little. Not an expert by any means but I used to hang out at Segrest Farms (had a friend who lived on site there) so have had decent exposure I guess to tropical fish. Now, here's my question; I just got a tank setup & it came with a used sacem 800 powerhead which makes a rattling noise; could this be the impeller or what? I've never had a powerhead before so don't know anything about them. I don't know where to put this question on the forums so if you could redirect me I'd appeciate it. Oh, I have 3 aquariums and one rubbermaid tub. 2 are ten gallons, and this new one is a 20 gallon high that's also 10x20 but 2x as high. One has 2 african clawed frogs and a snail and the other one has some baby african cichlids. The tub has a musk turtle & the 20 gallon high doesn't have anything in it. It was supposed to be for the turtle but I don't know since it's so high. Best regards all!

most likely its the impeller. im not familiar with that exact make, but if you can, just take it apart carefully, clean it, and reassemble.

I took it apart and cleaned it. What's strange is when it's just hanging in the water it doesn't make noise but when I attach it to the undergravel filter tube is when it makes the rattling noise.

well theres your problem. you should get rid of the UGF all together. theyre more harmful to your tank then good, and are not nearly as effective as they seem to be.
