I just bought a 29 gal tank with a MarineLand Penguin bio-wheel filter 150 series. Came with a hood. Its the tank that has a wood trim to it. Bought it at petsmart.

I just got it yesterday so its cycling right now. I haven't made up my mind on what fish to get. Ill post up pics as soon as its done cycling and i get some fish in there.

Im not sure what kind of gravel to get. Has anyone tried granite? I have a granite counter top shop and have tons of left over granite.. Latterly tons. So I might try to mix in some granite with some type of gravel or sand? Don't know yet..

Any suggestions? Btw after i buy some zebras or something to cycle the tank i plan on putting in some cichlids of some kind. What type of gravel or sand would be best for them?

Granite should have no ill effects on the aquarium itself, granted you rinse it well first. However, if it's got sharp edges I wouldn't suggest using it with any fish that burrow or sift through the sand, as it could injure them.

What sort of cichlids are you interested in? Cichlids are a diverse group of fish so substrate requirements could vary greatly.

Yep so far im deciding on the Ramirez's Dwarf Cichlid aka German Blue Ram.

Maybe 2 females and 1 male.. Anything else i can put in the tank with them?
