Hey guys,

I'm not 100% new to aquariums, but I am definitely brand spankin' new to salt water aquariums. That's what I'll be using this forum for...to help me build and maintain my first salt-water aquarium.

A bit about me:

I'm a 21-year old full-time college student in my senior year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I'm originally from Del Rio, TX, but I live up here now until I graduate.

I'm usually kept busy with school, work and sports, but it's always nice to have something on the side to keep an interest in and to garner some responsibility for...that's where my aquarium will come into play!

i strongly suggest doing a few months of reading before buying anything, including the tank ( unless ofcourse you already have one )

ontop of that search your area for a local reefing club. they are great for meeting new people and learning things.

I already have a 55 gallon tank with an aquaclear 70 filtration system. Just stuff I had picked up already...I'm thinking I might need a different filtration unit as well as other supplies for the salt water set-up.

But yes, I am definitely well into reading and researching my tank...I won't be starting it until about Aug. 26th or so (first day of school) so I have time.

a 55 gallon makes an awesome DIY sump IMO but not so much a display tank. i find them to skinny and harder to get a nice aquascape with live rock, however you already have the tank so it can def. be used and people do use them but i find a 75 gallon ( which is the same length just wider ) to be easier to aquascape. again no biggie as you already have the tank.
the filter you want is going to be a skimmer. READ online reviews and invest into a quality brand as some are plain old garbage while others actually hold their weight when it comes to skimming. any type of other mechanical filtration (unless a carbon/phosban reactor and UV sterilizer ) is a waste IMO/IME including hang on filters, canister filters, filter floss, bio balls, even jam packing the sump with too much live rock. again, read up.
a reefing club is a club dedicated to keeping saltwater tanks. each one is different but similiar at the same time, in that members keep saltwater tanks. google is your friend, search your area for one.
