I have a 20 gallon tank with 2 filters, a heater, and 14 female fancy guppies. The tank is kept between 78°- 80° and all the water parameters are good. My question is one of my girls is keeping her top and bottom fins pinned down, has a long white tube looking thing coming out of her butt. She's barely eating and keeps rubbing herself on the rocks. None of the other girls are doing it and I haven't added any new fish in about 2 months. The pet store told me it sounded like parasites and sold me some medicine for it.I was just wanting to get answers from a more knowledgeable person. I'm going to try to attach some pics but I'm not sure if I know how. Thanks in advance.
The clamped fins are probably stress, yes flashing is a sign of parasites and I would treat her for it, and the white thing is probably an indication that it is a digestive parasite. Also, I don't know if this is lighting, but it looks like she is being in one eye?
I'm pretty sure it's just the lighting. Her eyes looked good. Unfortunately she died last night. It broke my heart. She was one of the very first guppies I got. Thanks for replying though. I really appreciate it
Is that white poop I see? Sure sign of parasites. Same with itching(AKA flashing). I had a goldfish I purchased with internal parasites that had very long white tube-like poop that was almost see-through. Fed him and everyone else some food medicated with metronidazole and he did alright. Metro clears up parasites AND helps with bacterial infections from them.
I'm sorry you lost her. That really sucks when it happens, sometimes parasites can cause an massive internal infection before they get the chance to waste away. Be sure you treat your other fish for parasites too. If he was with any others, that is. I'd recommend a round or two of metronidazole so nobody else gets sick.
I'll second the lower temps too, but they prefer it around 74-76 actually. I wouldn't put them lower than 74, seeing as they're tropical livebearers and can get worse infections in colder temps. Mine like it right at 75F-76F.
