what goes well with swordtails?

i have a few swordtails and a common pleco that i am trying to figure out what else to have with them when i get my next tank. they will be in a 55 gallon tank. i have hardish water (don't know the exact ratings because i buy drinking water) with a pH of 7.8 (7.6 with driftwood in the tank, which they would have). i plan on having some floating plants, hoping that some, but not all, of the fry will live. what do people recommend?

Maybe you could have a livebearer tank and keep them with mollies, platies and guppies etc.

I might consider Ruby Barbs, gold barb's,Danios that would all appreciate cooler temps in low 70's as opposed to more tropical temps.
The floating plant's, or Fry net will ensure some fry survive.
