Some Pet Stores (mostly mom and pop stores) will be willing to take younger fish (but not fry). You should talk to the owner of a small pet store and work out conditions, just taking them off your hands or exchange for fish food or vital supplies.

Most small store owners will be willing to make arrangement if you are a frequent customer. It also helps if you only have fish in you tank, that you bought from them. It is a given that you can't give them sick fish nor fish from a diseased tank.

Fish that are raised locally like pets, tend to be healthier and happier than those raised as live stock and shipped across the country if not the world. But you most maintain your good standing with the owner and not give him or her sick fish.

Use common sense and don't try selling your fish to chain stores.
