Hey guys! Are swordtails platys? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I'm not sure if they are or not....I think they are because I THINK that my swordtail mated with my platy, but I'm not sure...

I don't know, they look identical, I have some and i dont even know lol. I will research that. When I first got them I though the tank was mis labeled at petsmart cause it was all females and they looked like platys.

No swordtails are not platys although they are closely related and can interbreed. Female swords do look like platies though but are slightly longer. Male swords also have a sword-like tail that platys don't If you look in the top left part of the screen there's something that says "Tropical Fish Profiles" click that then look under the livebearers part for both species.

Thanks!!! My platy gave birth a few months ago and I had already had her from the store for about 7 months, so I didn't think she could still have been storing sperm. That would make sense if she interbred with my swordtail.

actually it could have been either. I believe platys can store sperm just like swords can but I'm not sure for how long. I guess the only way to know is see what the fry look like.
