i was wondering whether there are reasons why my guppy isn't giving birth. She is a new female that i bought but i noticed she is pregnant and had her into the breeding tank for almost 4 weeks and still isn't giving birth. She looks like she is about to burst and I can see the babies inside moving and they turned brown from black. And also if she does give birth is it ok to put ghost shrimp with the frys??

Your problem is that she is in the breeding trap.

This puts a lot of stress on the mother, which leads to her "putting-off" the babies untill she is out, or even aborting them.

Do you have a lot of hiding spots in your tank? My platy gave birth, and the strongest fry are now always hiding in plants or under my driftwood, coming out every so often for a few seconds.

And the Ghost Shrimp; no. They will catch any baby fry that swims by them and eat them. Other shrimp (like Cherries or Amanos) should work.

hmm wait is she in a tank or a breeding net it sounds like inuit_jay is sasying that she is in her own tank. inuit_jay if she is in her own tank then it may just be a large litter, i have a platy that took nearly 2 months to give birth, it all depends, is she looking squarish? if she is in a tank it may of stressed her to move i dont know if that would make a difference but that seemed to happen to my platy. hope she gives birth soon

My guppy did give birth just today... but i don't think it finished, it gave birth to rather weird fries, and she still look really fat and pregnant... she gave birth and the fries are entirely orange with big fins, it rather looks like molly babies that I have but with bigger fin... can it be hybrid? and can that be the reason why it took her so long to give birth?
