Hey yall, so i just got rid of my convicts in my 20 gal and traded them for 4 platies 1 m 3f. Id like too know how long you think it would be b4 i have alot of them once they start breeding? Im only keeping them in one tank and at most d buy a breeder. Buti do have some good plant cover so i dont even know if thats necessary, what are your thoughts?

My brother has got platties and they just bread like bunnies, so much so that he gave a few to my stepdad which in turn bread like bunnies, he then gave some to my step sister to take for the aquarium in the prison she works at. So i guess leaving them to it or using a breeder doesnt make to much difference

With 3 females and one male in that tank, you will be seeing fry every month as the male will impregnate all three females as soon as he is able, and that has probably already occurred. Each brood can be anywhere from 20-70 fry, times three. There is no way all those will get eaten, so this will create an issue with the water quality. You will need to cull out the fry somehow.

My large cichlids will be in charge of population control. One female i bought already kind of pregnant (feeder platy) but the other two and the male seem as though they havent fully matured yet. Those 3 are hi-fin platies. Hopefully within a month theyll start mating at least. This is what the tank looks like though so you can get an idea of what the cover is like:y
Should i add more fish to get the numbers up faster? If yes how many?
Your thoughts and anymore advice are appreciated.

My platies came home pregnant, so it was only a matter of weeks. I find platies to be more interesting than convicts, too. No offense to lovers of Convicts, but really, what's the challenge? The book "Aquariums for Dummies" says they are so easy to breed they will "spawn in a mud puddle during an earthquake!" Platies are a more appropriate fish for a tank of this size, too. You made a wise choice IMO.

In my pic you can see how large the platies are. How many shoud i start with and does that look like breeding size yet?

They look large enough to me to breed soon. One male and two females oughtta do it. A couple years ago I purchased two trios of guppies. All but one died except a single female who was pregnant. She proceeded to have several broods in the absence of an adult male.

As you know, livebearers can have successive preganancies (some have suggested as many as 8-10) from a single mating. The platies I own are both female and there are possible males among the broods they have already had! Honestly, unless you but "virgin platies" or all males, you will have babies!

Convicts are a great cichlid to "learn on". And they display textbook examples of territoriality that are fascinating. But most cichlids you purchase will be with you for many years and I like mine to be more colorful than these!
