Non Fin-Nippers for my tank?

I have 2 kissing gouramis, 1 female betta, and a few ghost shrimp in my big tank. They all get long fine in there but i wanted to add some more. I tried some type of little fish.. It was some kind of tetra (Cant remember the name now.) And they nibbled off the tail on my gourami and started biting my betta. They are in a different tank now, but i want to find out which little (maybe 1 or 2 inches) fish i could add that wouldn't make a meal out of my other fish. I know some people claim bettas and gouramis are aggressive, but mine get along peacefully. So, what other fish do you think would be okay in my tank? (Or snails or something, its just such an empty tank)
Also, I keep my tank heated at 78 F
