New guppies, babies, and odd behavior

okay, so today I bought 4 Fancy Guppies, 3 females and 1 male, from Petco. I was told that they separate the males and the females so that they wouldn't be breeding all the time.

Let's rewind a little though.

I set my tank up and let it cycle. I tested my PH, Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates and they all seemed good. I also took a sample of my water to Petco for them to test too, just to be on the safe side. Everything was safe and so I decided to buy my first few fish. While picking them out I of course picked out ones I liked, but I also made sure that they were active and looked healthy. When I came home I acclimated them for around 30 minutes then I transferred them (via net) into my tank. Right off the bat they all swam to hide behind the heater and/or filter. I put a little food in the tank not knowing if they had been fed yet that day and left them alone to get used to the new tank. About 4 hours later I went back to check on them and sure enough there were babies. So I figured that was another reason they were hiding. But then I thought, why would they all be hiding, including the male. I have noticed maybe 2 or 3 more babies since the first time and one of the females has come out from behind the heater but she isn't swimming she is just floating at the service. I can see her fins moving, her breathing and her eyes moving. The other 3 are still hiding. The babies are super active and are swimming all over just below the surface of the water?

Does anyone know what could be going on? Are they just stressed? Please help!

Thanks!

Welcome to the group. Also congrats on the new babies you will have lots more coming.

It sounds like the guppies are stressed so I would give them 24-48 hours before I worried. Most new fish will take that long to adjust to the new tank and feel safe. Also females giving birth will hide so that could be why the females are doing that and the male doesn't want to swim around alone.

Just so you know females will drop they fry if they get stressed and this often happens after moving them to a new tank so fully normal. They will also have fry about every 30 days, but unless the tank has lots of hiding places most won't grow up so you won't be over run by them.

They might not eat much for the first 2 or 3 days, but that isn't a issue most fish can go 5-6 days with out food once in a while(like while on vacation)
