My new Molly had babies!!

I had been wondering if one of the females I recently purchased was pregnant because she was super fat and apparently I was right! This morning when I turned on the lights I found 15-20 little babies swimming around the tank!

I'm wondering if there's anything I can do care wise to see if I can raise some of them. I have lots of plants and cover in the tank (29g) so I think they have a fighting chance on making it. I don't think I'd be very successful at netting them to move them to a new tank, which I don't really have anyways.

What kind of food should I get for them, and any tips on making sure they actually eat it?

The male molly is also glued to the one female that just gave birth too and won't leave her alone. I have one male and two females in there. Is he ever going to leave her alone?

Thanks for any advice you have!

like all livebearer fish fry you can feed them on crushed fish flakes............just get a small container and crush it up real small .....almost like a powder.if there in your main tank then they will just eat what the adults dont eat but if there in a breeder net then they will eat the crushed flakes i feed my guppy fry on crushed flakes and tubifex worms.....hope this helps

Thanks, I picked up some flake food and crushed up a TINY bit to feed them. The majority of the fry are hiding in a big area of dwarf sag, so I'll try using that area as a feeding ground for em :)

Make sure you have lots of plants for them to hide in! My swordtail just had babies, and i didn't have enough plants! most of them started to get eaten so i had to scoop as many out as i could and put them in a seperate (smaller) tank!

Yeah there's lots of plants and tiny caves for them to hide out in. They should be pretty safe!

You should consider moving fry to a smaller tank or gallon jar. Fry get tired really fast. If other fish don't kill them, the energy spent on looking for the tiny flake food will.

Try and net as many as you can. It could increase the number that live.

Will I need to figure out how to filter the water? I don't have a second tank set up but I could certainly move them into a couple gallon vase that my girlfriend used to have a betta in. The majority of them have become fish food, but it would be cool to raise a few.

Oh my....

The cheapest way is to keep the fry in low water preferably in a WHITE bucket. It's cheap and easy to find. Plastic containers will do as well. Ever thrown out an ice cream bowl? Now is when you need one.

Filtration can be done with a DIY sponge filter. Another cheapo secret.

Just remember to do 20% daily water changes. . . . You might need a heater for your bucket.

You really should invest in a fry nursery. You're gonna get fry in a month you know...
