Moving Guppy Fry

I've got a pregnant Guppy in the breeder and am expecting babies in the next few days. My girlfriend lives about 20 minutes away and we just got her tank set up a couple days ago. When the Guppy has her fry, I want to transfer them from my tank to my girlfriends tank. Anyone have any input on whether you think this would work without stressing out the babies. If nothing else I may try to send a few and if they live I will send the rest.

Hi Boss, Yup the old pregnant Guppy.lol I have 6 tanks fo guppies and at least one always seem preg. If the new tank isnt cylced i wouldnt move them. I really wouldnt move them if it was..lol If I do use a breeder I like to keep the fry in their so they can get food without haveing to use the energy to swim up to the top of a tank no matter what size. I sometimes keep them in there for a couple of weeks without any proble. I gently lift the breeder up a little each day to refresh the water in it sort of a gentle up and own a few times. What are you going to feed them and how often. these are the things that can make a dif in their growing. What else is in the tank tha has the female? I have some tanks that the other gups dont bother the fry when born and some eat them like candy..lol I guess that is what Java Moss is for.;) Hop ethi shelps a bit and keep us posted. I am going to hatch some baby brine shrimp and feed them that when they pop out. And some of the good ole crushed flake food haha. But her tank has fully cycled, well at least it will have by the time the babies come out. I only have them in a 10 gallon tank and the other fish will for sure eat the baby fry. So its either leave them in the breeder net for a couple weeks or transfer them to her empty tank. I really want to transfer them I'm just worried about the 25 minute car ride.

Hi Oh I think they would be ok in a ziplock baggie fo rthe ride. I have had fish shipped to me that have been in a bag for sometimes 2 or 3 days with no problem. I would though be very very carefull about acclimating them slowly. I would once I got them there put them in a container and add a little water every 15 min or so till the amount of ater has doubled. Then empty half the water out and do it again. I would check temp so that its close as that will twig them out. Once I used a drinking glass to hold fry as i did it. hey any port in a storm lol i am sure you and them will do fine. Will the have the BBS over at the new tank? btw what kind of gup is she? keep us posted and goo dluck.

I'm not real sure what kind she is shes very plain looking and I bought her pregnant so I don't know what the dad looks like. Its a little more exciting that way because I don't know what im getting haha. But I think I'm going to send a couple at a time to see if they can handle the car ride. And I'm a little worried about getting them in the new tank without some kind of shock haha. But I'll keep it updated and i'll get some pics when they come out.

Ya gups can be full of surprises and then some.. If you have another breeder,I use a net breeder also sometimes, that way you can keep a closer eye on them and a count.lol The more food they can get and less swimming does help them grow What type of filter is in the new tank?? If it is a hang on back you might want to try and cover the uptake tube so they dont get sucked in. A piece of old nylon with and elastic will do it as used by some. Its great to see the fry and watch them grow and soon you will have a tank full and need to set up anothe tank.;)Ya I said I was only going to have one tank also.lol good luck and cant wait for an update.

Yea i've got the female in a net breeder as we speak. I realise that if I'm not there when she has the fry she may eat a couple since I don't have the divider that drops the small fry into another level. But I couldn't find that kind anywhere. And yea the new tank has a hang on the back filter, but I told her she may have to put some panty hose or something of the sort over the filter until the fry get a little larger. Thanks for the support and I will keep it updated.

What size is the new tank? Do you have any plastic plants in your tank or that you are not using? Some pastic plants have leaves or stems that can easily be pulled off. you might try putting some of a plant in the net breeder to give the fry a bit of a chnace. Cant count the fry I have lost because I was going to do that later.lol The good thing is hopefully she will have many more fry in the months to come. Even without her being with another male she can still have a few drops left in her. keep up the good looking out.

Yea I have quite a large breeder. It has plenty of room for the female to swim around and one side of it has a heavy dose of plants to give the babies a chance. And heres a picture of my girlfriends tank where the babies will make their new home haha. Definitely a girls tank.

If the tank on the other end is cycled, its not a problem to move the fry. Just put them in a jar and move them. I'm having trouble understanding how a tank that has been set up for a couple of days is cycled. The temperature will probably settle down and there is time to get rid of the chlorine but that is not cycling a tank. Cycling will take weeks unless it gets a jump start from another established tank by way of filter media and such.
