mollies and salt

I have read that a little salt in the water is beneficial for mollies. how true is this? I have been using 1 tsp/ 5 gal.

also, what do i do for the algae in the tank? can any algae eaters handle the low salt content of the water or will i just have to use an algae scraper?

1 tbsp per 5 gal? i didn't think they needed that much salt. what kind of salt do you use? i have been using aquarium salt. would something like Instant Ocean be better or doesn't it make any difference?

Salt is not needed unless the mollies have been adapted to conditions with high salinity level.

Hjkaga, aquarium salt is not compulsory. I would suggest you stop using it unless you feel it necessary to do so.

Actually aquarium salt can still benefit mollies eventhough they've been raised in freashwater.
Mollies in their natural habitat can be found in brackish water OR (more commonly) in fresh water streams.
The reason aquarium salt benefits these fish is not because of the salinity itself but rather the hard minerals it provides them and also their water with (to work as a buffer)
ideal pH for mollies is 7.5 - 8 so slighty hard and alkaline.

also a huge benifit is that it's an effective anti-parasite and antifungal medication when used regularly in the tank (with water changes and what not)

mollies can be prone to lots of nasty diseases. so my suggestion is to add a tablespoon of a aquarium salt for every 5 Gal. (which is certainly not too much) along with every water change. Your mollies will be happier, healthier, and be around for you longer than they would without it.

hope this helps

I'd just like to ad that while salt can be beneficial for mollies it is certainly not necessary especially if they have been brought up in freshwater, as Lupin mentioned.

If however, you ever plan on keeping them with any freshwater fish you should stop the salt. Salt acts as a sort of boost to help them foght off diseases which is why it's often used as a treatment. BUT, if they are kept in salt for too long their immune system is weakened as they don't need to fight of disease naturally. If you then take them out of the salt then they will be unable to fend for themselves, so to speak.

My personal opinion is don't use the salt.
