Male guppy guarding the babies?

Our Guppy just had 7, or so, babies. The male is keeping them under a piece of wood we have in the aquarium. If one or more escapes from under the wood, he herds them back and stays in front of them in a protective stance, only leaving to chase away the female or any of the other occupants of the aquarium. Is this normal??

LOL Guppies usually just eat their babies,not guard them. Sounds more like something a Convict Cichlid would do. They are great parents.

I'll give it a shot with the video after I get home from work. It might be a bit difficult because he and the babies are kind of tucked way up under the piece of wood. I'm not sure how I would do it without having to submerged the camera.

Wow I have tons of guppies and never has that happend I want to see maby he was kept like that when he was a fry and do the fry eat?

Well, got home from work, checked fishes, and the male is back to trying to impress the female. I guess his Mr Mom" routine didn't do it for her, so now he has to go back to the old fashion way...lol Alas, we are down to four babies.

Interesting behavior tho, my wife was the one who noticed it and pointed it out to me. She has far more experience with guppies than I do, my experience is mainly cichlids, and she had never seen it before either.

Oh well...sorry to get y'all excited. If he should start it up again, I will be ready this time!
