Gemmylou, welcome to the wonderful world of livebearers. Many of the most common livebearers are easy to distinguish based on their anal fin shape. There is an example here of a pair of mollies

And there is an example here of 2 heterandria formosa

In both cases the anal fin shape is the distinguishing feature.

Wait, guppies?

There is no distinction between colors in a male that says he is a female; they come in a variety of colors. Males generally have longer tail fins. The anal fin can also be a distinction.

I notice with all my guppies that males have coloured bodies and females only have paterns on their tails. But as stated the only way to know for sure is the Gonopodium.
