male/female ratio

for platies and guppies, most sources say that the minimum ratio is 1 male to 2 females, or even more females if possible. but if i don't want babies, is there any harm to having all males, or all females. like would they get depressed if they didn't have the opposite sex to mingle with? or even cause harm to a female who was never able to give birth?

also with platies, instead of getting alot of the same kind, i prefer to just get one of each kind that i like. does that bother platies, when they're forced to co-exist with a bunch of single species, instead of more of their own colors and patterns? thx.
