Just what are they nibbling at?

Ok so I know it's normal for fish to suck/nibble on rock an ornaments but I'm wondering just what it is they're doing? There's obviously nothing there the human eye can see, so bacteria? Another reason I think this is because they seem to do a lot of this at the heater. Any idea?

I concur with the above. They also pick at items looking for essential minerals. Before you ask, carnivors get minerals from what they eat.
