How many guppies?

My 11 year old daughter has been bitten by this fish keeping bug and I have a 40l tank that she would like to set up and maintain with guppies. How many guppies can she sensibly have in this small tank?

sounds like me but i was the 11 year old ( im 15) but i have guppies (obviosly) so like maby you should get like 6 like maby 2 males and 4 females you will have plenty of guppies soon they will eat them so you wont have to many

40 litres in about 10 gallons. When I had guppies in my 10 gallon I started with 1 male and 3 females and soon had plenty of fry. Yes, they will eat some but some will survive. Or, you could do an all male guppy tank so you don't have an issue with the fry overstocking the tank. I think 6-8 males would be good.

I agree with the all male tank. If you have both sexes you will soon have a Guppy explosion and your tank will be over stocked. Trying to get rid of them is harder then you think and they just keep over populating. The males are more colorful often times anyway so... Maybe 4-5 males and some nice live plants? Woudl make for a very pretty tank. :) Where do you live? If you are by chance near Green Bay, Wi I can hook you up with some free males that are very colorful. :)

Hi and thank you for your help. We are in Somerset in the UK so probably a bit to far away from you to collect LOL! Thank you for your kind offer tho

I've set her tank up this afternoon to settle and warm up, it's a sand substrate and some live plants and am planning on transfering one of my spare cycled fliters into her tank as soon as we buy the fish so that the bacteria in it don't die off, can I expect it to cycle again with this filter? (It's been in with dirty puffers who have quite a high bioload)

Should we start with just a few fish then add some more in a few weeks time or put in 8 straight away as the bacteria in the filter have been used to a high bioload already?
