Go by 1" per gal. Use your fishes full grown size to determine. Understocking is better then over stocking. Guppies will multiply if you put male and female, Maybe just go with male guppies. They are better looking then the females anyway. Petco has them at 5 for $5 so they are $1 each you can't beat that price anywhere. That sale runs from March 1 to March 21 only.
If you don't want fry to ruin your tank, use all males. If you put a female in that tank, it should be the only guppy you add. The bettas will not be able to control the population explosion of a breeding group of guppies. If you have lots of other tanks to grow the fry, a ratio of 1 male to 3 females would be a good idea for breeding.
