Hello, New guy here-kinda long

Hi everyone,

I just decided to join this forum as i have read a lot of useful info here over the last month.

thought im new here, i'm am not a complete noob with fish, this is my 3rd tank set up, but my first with livebeares and snails :)

my first tank was a 10 gallon tank that was bought for 3 fantail goldfish, of course i didnt know anything about the cycling a tank and the people at petco didnt warn me about it, they just told me they had a 15 day guarantee on the fish so if they die then i cold bring the dead ones in and get new ones.

well needless to say 2 of them died in the first week, the water got cloudy, i brought the fish to the store and a water sample, they tested it said it was high in ammonia and gave some stuff to neutralize de ammonia, well i didnt know it was supposed to get couldy and to just leave it so it would mature and keep bacteria in it. well the one lone goldfish survived the hole ordeal of the constant ammonia spikes due to not letting the tank cycle, i eventually fixed the problem by doing water changes with water from the pond behing my house, the water was tinted green but it tested good now :D eventually i realize that "Gordo" the immortal lol was getting to big for his 10 gallon and got a 30 gallon for him, in wich he continued to live to the ripe old age of 5 years old before he died of what i hope if old age, he was a character following poeple around the room and comming to the surface to be pet and hand fed lettuce.

after he died i moved and my roomate had a cat so i hesitated in filling the tank again, eventually gifting my set up to a friend for his new leopard geckos.

About 3 years ago, My aunt got a betta in a cup as a gift at work knowing that she is a huge animal lover, she couldn let it leave in a cup, she called me and we set up an eclipse system 3, since we needed to move Yozuri ( the betta i named him after a brand of fishing line i use lol) and we couldnt properly cycle the tank we gave some of the cycle product a try, since our tap water had chloramine, we put the stuff that removes chlorine, we had enough ammonia to add the cycle stuff and the next day we put him in it, Well yozuri lived really short life for a betta, my aunt thinking she was actually helping him ended up killing him, by once a week cleanin his tank doing water changes and cleaning the bio wheel so the tank would try to cycle every week and then she would add chemicals to clear the water up. once he died my aunt saved the tank in her garage wher i found it about a month ago after helping her clean it out.

i took it home cleaned it really well, cleaned the gravel an the plants and everything, treated my water filled the tank, and let it start running for a few days, then i googled aything i could about prepping a tank for fish, i got an api freshwater master test kit, and dicovered that the ammoni level where pretty high in my tank and i started noticing the wter getting cloudy, and let it run its course, a few days after that i decided that i didnt wnt to see my tank empty but i didnt want to get a sacrifice fish, i had researched bottom feeders and had decided on a snail, i went to my petsmart and bought frank the tank a golden mystery snail to help me cycle my tank if he survived then i already had a critter i wanted in thhere, well frank survived , granted he didnt eat much and spent most of the time near the top of the water with that breathing straw getting air, once i saw my ammonia and nitrite level go to zero and nitrate start to increase i did a water change with spring water and went to the store to get fish.

I walked out with 3 male guppies.
Chester. its a yellow leopard fan tail
Coors is a Silver and blue with some red dots in his belly and a double sword tail
Coke ( its a temp name i dont think its apropiate) is a red/orange with a white/black leopard belly and a fan tail

this is my first time with guppies and i know that i the tank is prob too small for them , i am already planning on getting a 20 or 30 gallon tank for them and expanding the community and possibly breeding them :)

i know its long but just wanted to share on my exitement with my new pets, lol now i have a choc lab (Ron), a pointer/greyhound mix (Lucy), 2 love birds (buggie and triny) 3 guppies and a snail..lol

Hi there Brujo,

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you've got a lot planned. We look forward to your updates on progress.

And I just have to share that I had love birds a long time ago (Harold & Maude) who absolutely HATED each other LOL. I had to seperate them and then they just screeched at each other from their individual cages.

Good luck with all your fishy plans.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
