Guppy breeding Setup

So I got my 1000 Liter flowbin (My new pond) and Cut the top off (Pics to follow tomorrow) I haven't filled it yet but I was thinking about adding 50 show Guppies in there. I have kept mollies but do guppies breed faster than mollies? I used to get 1 batch a month and I had about 3 females, I cant really remember.

There's going to be Hyacinth in there to provide hiding places. I also want my Goldfish to breed. My I have 4 hybrid orandas, 2 male and 2 female (1 female spawned but ready to spawn again), and 2 comets which are unidentified at this point in time.

Do you recommend getting a few quality strain Guppy pairs out of the 50, place them in a tank to be bred selectively and putting the balance in the pond to interbreed?

If the strains are just the fancy mixed variety I will just throw all 50 in there to breed and keep mosquitoes at bay.

Will the Goldfish become Guppy fry eaters? I don't want too many to die :(. I want to have 300 guppies by end of summer so hopes are high....:)

I'm going to be paying like $0,05 each so hence the reason for buying 50 in one go.

Here's the 1000L (270Gal) flowbin. I will probably get the guppies by this evening. (its 13:10 now)

Getting my comets back from my cousin. They grew so fast. They will join my orandas and comets in the flow bin. Just not sure if the Goldfish will eat the Guppy fry or not.

I like you idea! Should be interesting to see how it goes. I've never kept Goldfish, but from what I've read it says they like cooler water, will this be an issue with a more tropical fish like the guppies?

I breed guppys (although not on such a scale) and i know that Goldfish will chomp down on those baby guppies. They have a hard enough time escaping from their perants. Also i would reccomend getting a few good ones that are realy pregnant because for the 2 dollars you will get about 20 baby guppies of a good quality. However, If the tank is just going to keep the rejects i think it will be fine with the Goldfish and they will help keep down numbers.

Get another opinion though because i have only gone through about 6 generations so i dont know as much as the seasoned veterans. The rejects for me just go to be fed to my turtle who quite enjoyes kulling.

I live in South Africa and get 1 Guppy for $1US. Pretty steep for guppies. I was just thinking of putting my Goldfish in. I'm sure with the space, I can save more fry.

The Goldfish will probably eat all of the Guppy fry..

Theoretically, the guppies could survive with enough plant cover... but since Goldfish shred/eat/destroy plants, I wouldn't count on any guppies surviving...



Then again, with the right setup, in 5 months... lets see how many guppies from 7.

1 male- 6 females, 60 fry

Month 2
1 male- 6 females, 60 juvies 60 fry

23 males- 36 females, 60 juvies, 360 fry

Month 4
55 males, 66 females, 360 juvies, 660 fry

Month 5
200 males, 246 females, 660 juvies, 2460 fry

This is assuming, of course, a high temperature (about 80 degrees) and a healthy diet, along with lots and lots of aquariums and breeding traps. Also assuming 10 fry per pregnancy, which is a pretty safe bet.

Also, in about 80+ degrees, the fry would be old enough to mate and have young at around 2 months old.

I was thinking of starting with just a trio in a 3 GAL until the females get pregnant? I will have a sponge filter running as well.

Once Females show signs of being heavily pregnant, I place them in a 10GAL within a breeding trap and let them drop the fry.

FOOD: Thinking of BBS and have a micro worm culture on the way in the mail. Then crushed cichlid pellets and spirulina sticks for them to grow out faster. Once this trio breeds, the fry will be sold and the cash will be spent 1 more 3 Gal setup. From what I've read, 2 females will give me 20 fry. I will only sell the males off course :).

Females Will be kept for future breeding. Guppies are one of the easiest live bearing fish to sex when young.

Hopefully I can build a bank of tanks just for breeding show guppies. Also getting some Discus by end of December. They will be kept until I get pairs out of them. Then they go into their tall 2ft breeding tanks.

Let me know what you think about the guppies?
