I think I have the fish addiciation :)

I have talked it over with the wife, I am gonna try my hand at fish breeding, i have a few pet stores around my area, I am gonna touch base with them to see if they will buy my fry. I am gonna start out small with some live beares, and move to more diffucult species as i gain experience. I plan on a few tanks to start, i have done this is the past for fun with black mollies and I was very sucessful.

Wish me luck, I should be getting some tanks end of the month. and anyone with some good advice would be greatly appreciated :).

Thanks

Don

well i have been building a breeding program for a bit and i think its a lot of fun and yes it is an addiction.. but hey you arent killing any one and your not burning out your brain cells right? lol.... as for advice hhhhmmmmmmmm i am sure you know already if you have done this before have a birthing tank, a fry tank and a tank for the males and females so you can reasonably control the breeding activity.. i personally leave the males and females together and then move the mama to the birthing tank after about ten days in there and have her hang out until birth so that the males dont keep stressing her out... and if you really really like your mama's (we all should) have a very high female to male ratio i keep 15 females to 3 males.... when i had smaller tanks it was still 5:1...

Hey,

Thanks for the reply :), Yeah I have done this before, on a small scale I bred mollies, I had one male and female, I was still giving 30-40 fry a month to the pet store i lived near LOL. I am not to sure what
to breed this time, I have sent a couple emails out to wholesalers close to me, seeing what they are in need of?. I also have a few pet stores in my city I am going to contact to see what fish they need/want. this will detreem what type of stock I keep. I also would like to breed my Betta, he is a nice fish, with a good temperment, I would like to find a nice mate for him.

Do you sell your stock to pet stores or to wholesalers?, I am curious as to how much they buy from you
at one time, and how they buy the stock, do they pay buy bag or per fish?

Thanks

i have sold to LFS at 25 cents per fish and i have sold to people i know for less.. as i build up i will get into larger sales right now i am deciding whether or not to stay with guppies (i love them but my LFS gets theirs from over seas and they dont do well in my tanks) or with the more hardy platy which i also love and have great success with.

I just got an email back form one of the wholesalers, he is looking for new kinds of colours and stuff, So I think I am gonna try and do some cross breeding on mollies, see if I can get some neat colour combos
going, I will prob do some other live bear's as well, as time and money permit, but for now mollies are easy and have a fast turn around. I am maining doing it for the experience right now :)

The best advice, if you are trying to do the breeding for more than just fun, is to breed something that you have a hard time finding. The LFS can get all of the common fish for almost nothing from the really big breeders in Asia. The only way a small breeder can compete and make a little money is to carry something that will be popular but is not being bred in big numbers by someone else. If you are the only one breeding something that sells well, you can set your price to the LFS higher than you could on a common fish.

Yes, live bearers wont bring in much money. They will produce babies and provide some good entertainment. Like another person has mentioned its way cheaper to buy fish from asia, unless its not common. Those rare zebra plecos you can find on aquabid are a good one to start with. Ive never seen any at my local fish store. Stuff thats not common is good. Angels, convicts all live bearers, bettas ect should be kept for a hobby/entertainment not money ise.
