Evil Molly

I have a tank with Discus, rams, khuli loaches, otos....

Anyway, I did something stupid, but the result is unexpected. A LFS was giving away fish, and my wife fell in love with a black and white molly. I got it, thinking that it could stay in my tank while I hunted for a free 10 gal tank.

Note I understand the water parameters are very different, and I did not change them...the tank remained a Discus tank.

Well, it turned out the molly is evil (like in the SouthPark episode). It immediately started to harass all the other fish. I mean, non-stop. I would tap on the tank when I saw him doing this, and he would swim up to the glass and look at me like "what do you want" By the time I got a tank, it had killed 2 of my Otos, 3 loaches and one Discus (twice as big. I am so pi$$ed with myself for getting it.

Anyway, I got a 10 gal, and put him in there and he seemed fine.

Then yesterday, I had a Ram that looked a bit sick, so I figured I would use the 10 gal for an observation tank (hoping in the back of my mind the molly would have calmed down over this time). Within 10 seconds, the molly was on that Ram, never letting up....like a mad man....

So anyway, I put the Ram back in the main tank (or it would have been dead by now) and I have a 10 gal with nothing but a molly in it.

Because I won't kill it, and now that I have told everyone he is evil, none of my friends want it, I am stuck with it...I am going to make a divider and divide the 10 gal into 2 5 gal, so I still have 5 gal to work with the sick Ram...

But still, I have had fish for many years, and I cannot remember ever having an evil Molly before....was I just lucky? Or do I have an evil fish?

Is there a method to his madness?

im not sure whats going on with your molly but i do know that they are live baring fish that do not like to be alone. after you nurse the ram i would take the divider out and put like 3 more mollies in with your one. also dont beat yourself up over it im a woman myself and i know that what i say goes expecially with my fish and men kind of fold once you get to batting the eyes. if i were in your position i would give that 10 gal. to your wife and tell her its her responsiblity now. lol. when i bought my first molly it was the bully of the tank at the pet store but once i got it home it hide and was scared to be alone. im pretty sure you already know this but if params are not up to the fishes standards it can make them more aggressive. i dont think you have an evil fish but it seems to be very unhappy. get it a girl/ boy friend and see what happens.

working at a fish store, I often get customers coming in complaining about evil mollies. Its not as uncommon as you would think. Consider getting more mollies, especially some females to keep him preoccupied.

i agree that you should get more mollies, but dont just get one more especially if it is the opposet sex, this will trigger aggresion .another thing is that mollies like some salt in the water,i personally dint know if that will help with aggression or anything, but it might calm it down.if you can,get some more mollies for that one to play with and possibly some aquarium salt.i keep a black mollie in my 10 gal,but she is not aggressive,im not sure why but i think the guppies keep her comforted,i hope this helps you! :)

salt probably wont calm down the fish but it is true that some livebearers prefer a little saltier of an environment. If you have diseased or injured fish and its a high stress environment, salt will definitely help all of the fish. My vote is to either get soe buddies for it or try to find a new home for it.

I wouldn't recommend tapping the glass. Fish can hear sounds far better than we do and this can lead to shock and stress.

I was thinking about adding a female Dalmation Molly to my aquarium, because I think they're adorable, but I hear so many bad things about them. Then I read a thread like this and wonder if I should get one at all. :(
