Do Livebearers interbreed?

I read on the subject and many of the sources say that Platies and/or Swordtails can interbreed, but that doesn't seem to be the case for my fish. My male Mickey Mouse Platy sticks close to the female Mickey Mouse Platy and almost never leaves her side. He doesn't seem to even notice the other female Platies in the tank (although he does peck at them if they get too close).

The reason that I am asking this question is, unfortunately, my male Red Swordtail died the other day. The female is all alone and I really want to get her a companion. However, I'm wondering if I have to stick with the Red Swordtails or if I can get another kind. The Koi Swordtails have really caught my eye and I would like a male, but don't want him to be aggressive toward her. Would it be better if I just got a female instead?

Ok, sowrds and plattied will interbreed, but it isn't a given as you have seen. I would say that the death of the male sword may lead to male platty being a little more secure in the tank and he may start to roam when the female is pregnant and not receptive. As for getting another male, I would get a male swords if you are looking for another male. As for aggression, I have kept pretty much all of them and have seen aggression from all of them and also seen them be so passive they would never harrass another fish.

If there tend to be some aggression toward the male platty and new male sword then a couple fake or live plants will allow for one to hide when the other decides to be more aggresive.
