Are you thinking to pick up some guppies there instead? They have some very nice wild types that you might be able to bring back, I don't know about the customs rules though. Try dropping by a LFS while you are there and you may be surprised if they happen to carry any local fish. I have seen pictures of gorgeous native fish from that part of the world.
On the subject of playing Darwin, if you use too much cover you can end up grossly overpopulated like my little 10 gallon got in just a few months. Tomorrow I am going to a club meeting and will be taking along a net full of adults and fry to give to another member who wanted some. Last time I ran a net through the tank I ended up with about 10 adults and at least that many fry. They sold at auction for enough to buy a can of food so I guess I almost broke even.

I was flipping through Kijiji (free local classifieds) and there were a couple of adds of people selling guppies and platys.

As far as looks, I prefer the platys, but they are bigger than guppies. I've got three male platys in my tank currently, so I don't know what to do with them. One is definately the dominant one, and the other two are really meek. Would two girls be ok in with them? There's lots of swimming space and other fish to keep the males occupied.

For fish color genetics, do I need to breed color specific? (ie red wag mom and dad) or can I cross colors? (ie Red Wag dad and "sunset" aka all yellow mom?) Would the babies from that cross be reds and yellow wags?

2 females and 3 males is not a good combination for livebearers. If anything, you want the ratio in the other direction by quite a bit. Your local breeder is always a better bet than fish shops or on line shops. The shipping involved in both of those other approaches takes a toll on the fish. It will also let you see the tanks where the fish were bred and judge how well they are cared for before you get them. Don't be surprised if the tank is loaded with algae and look at the condition of the fish, not the aquascaping. Breeders do not worry much how the tank looks as long as the fish are healthy.
