I have a 5.2 gallon tank with substrate gravel, a live plant, three fake plants, and 5 endlers. I've been considering adding shrimp, but I'm not sure how many or what kind is the best to add. I've looked a bit into cherry, ghost, and amano shrimp, although I think I've narrowed it to between the cherry and ghost shrimp. I'm not looking specifically to breed any fish or shrimp, but I've heard that the fish would be likely to eat any baby shrimp. This is fine by me for them to have live food, as long as it doesn't harm the fish, or tempt them to attack the adult shrimp.
My question is basically just this: Which kind of shrimp is best suited to live with endlers, and how many can I safely add to my tank? I will probably end up replacing some fake plants with real ones, or just adding one or maybe two real ones to the mix.
I have had ghost, cherry and crystal shrimp with mine. I'd highly recommend crystal shrimp(smaller, but are quite expensive), or cherry shrimp(including other color morphs like the golds or blues depending what color you want...other color morphs are expensive though, careful. I also keep a couple Cajun dwarf crayfish with my endlers in a thoroughly planted tank without issue). Considering a smaller tank, I'd go with the cherries or crystals. =) Ghost shrimp are okay, bit bigger though.
Thanks for the reply I have added 5 ghost shrimp, as they were what my local pet store had, and I'd prefer to start with some less expensive shrimp because this is my first time trying to keep them.
So far so good, all of them seem to be fine with the fish, and the fish don't bother them either. They've discovered that they love to hide behind the filter, but come rushing out for dinner.
I'll try to update this if I add/lose any animals in the tank.
I keep a tank full of N-class black bar Endlers with Cherry shrimp and everything works out really well. It is best to start the tank with the shrimp first. A heavily planted tank with lots of driftwood and java moss is ideal. Here is a video of my N-class Black Bar Endlers in action.
It will also teach you a lot about the Endlers. It's a beautiful beautiful video with lots of information.
I'd stay way from Ghost Shrimp. The can be aggressive and do better with a little salt in the water. Cherry shrimp will work fine same for the dwarf crayfish.
