Anyone know about goodieds?

I've breed several types of goodieds over the years and want to set up a C.A.R.E.S. tank to reproduce several that are extinct or very close to it. My question is, can goodieds from the Characodon group breed with goodieds from the Skiffia group? If anyone knows give me a shout out--THANKS

Hi. To the best of my knowledge, after consulting a book on livebearers, I don't think they can cross-breed. But to be on the safe side, you may want to keep the two separate and try contacting someone in a livebearer association who may know more.

Thanks for the reply. I had already contacted the folks in the ALA as I'm a member. It seems I'm playing stump the band. I'll run a test tank and will not mix them until I have about 6 months under my belt.

Another option if you have the space and enough numbers would be to place a male of one group with females of another group in a test tank. If fry result, there's your answer. :)

Offhand now that I look at the info more, there does seem to be a slight possibility of hybridization as they seem to have originated in waters fairly close to each other - characodon in Durango and skiffia in Guadalajara. Google says that's about 7 hours apart.

It is very unlikely that these two species will cross(although it is best to keep them in a species tank only, if you do keep the two together there maybe some aggression among each other. Skiffia’s are reasonably peaceful and usually leave there young alone. Characodon audax can be very aggressive towards each other and often kill there fry. Also males can be very aggressive towards females often ending up with deaths, I don’t think the two will get along with each other,
