Metriaclima estherae (Red Zebra)

Family: Cichlidae

Common Name: Red Zebra

Origin and Habitat: Minos Reef/Lake Malawi

Compatibility/Temperament: They are preaty calm with most other Mbuna's (lake malawi) cichlids. This fish is fairly undemanding, and easy to keep, and along with its attrative colouration, Makes it a good candidate to be kept by both beginners and experienced hobbist

As most all african cichlids they are vegiterians. There diet should consist of S


Males could reach up to 5.5 inches. and females up to 4 inches.

Minimum Tank Suggestion

40 gallon

Water parameters for Red Zebra

PH of 7.8-8.4. The Water temp. should be from 76 to 84 degrees F.


This fish digs alot, so undergravel filters are not recommended. Good tank mates should be other mbuna but try to avoid other short bodied Zebra species. Also Labidochromis Caeruleus are not recommened, because of crossbreeding may occur. This fish like's the bottom to mid area's of the tank. They swim into rock work for safty from other fish and driftwood.
