I'm interested in the same subject.
(hopes someone posts)
I'd like to know about sizes and diets of snail species as well.

I have Zebra Nerite snails and they are very hard workers - and don't harm your plants. When I first introduced them - they went through my algae like a vacuum cleaner - and left all the plants in great condition. ONLY zebra nerites, though - as other varieties can only live in salt or brackish water conditions. Google Zebra Nerite Snails and you'll see the ones I mean. There are other options, but they can either grow too big (like apple snails) or cause damage to plants if you have them. Also Nerite snails DO NOT breed in your tank - so no problem of them becoming a nuisance.

olive nerites and black horned nerites will also live in freshwater and do a great job on algae, also............Deac, is correct, they will not breed in freshwater..........They will lay eggs in freshwater, but i have read that they need brackish water to hatch...............

Not all nerites cannot breed in FW. Neritina reclivata and Theodoxus fluviatilis are the exceptions but don't expect the babies to survive as they needed phytoplanktons in order to survive.

Lessi, I understand you asked which snails you'd like. There are hundreds to choose from. I suggest you look over this one and see which ones you like. Let me know and I'll gladly point out what may be suitable for you.
