I bought some trips about 2 days ago and I see them hatching and stuff but i nticed a thin layer of mucus like stuff on top. What is this? should I be concerned?
Not sure what that is. What kind of tank do you have them in? I read that after they grow up and die (they only live about 90 days), you can empty the tank and leave the gravel in there to dry for a few months, then add more distilled water to the tank. They will have laid more eggs so you'll get another batch of them! You can keep doing this over and over, apparently.
Do you have any pictures? I've always wanted some of these guys.
I used to keep these things... I've totally forgotton about them until I saw this post. They were neat little buggers. Makes me want to go get some more.
yeah its on the surface, there currently in a 1 liter tank thing that came in a kit until they get older. there only about 6 days old and are about the size of my pinky finger nail
Have you changed the water since you set it up? I'm not sure if you can use an airstone with triops, but that would help the water circulation and probably stop the mucus buildup on the surface.
correction. their friendly with eachother to apoint. but just make sure they have their personal space. with anything else their predatory. oh and for the babies. provide hidding spots
well, all triops are dead now (im guessing the got old) and laid eggs which i collected for future use. I put a single triop in my 10 gallon tank and he disappeared 0_0. I never even found its body 0_0
That's really weird. Are you sure it didn't crawl out? I guess it could have died and the ghost shrimp ate it, but I would think it would take a while for some ghost shrimp to eat an entire triop(s?).
Well if there were other of its kind in there id say its time was up and the other triops just cleaned it (ate) nothing to worry about they live up to max of like 2months id say
Today I was out shopping for anniversary presents for the old lady when I came across a triops kit. It's the one made by the Smithsonian institute. It came with a plastic "aquarium" that's maybe a quart, a little bag of sand, the triops eggs, a plastic castle, some food and a magnifying glass. I followed the instructions carefully.
The thing is...don't I have to worry about ammonia buildup and whatnot? Why shouldn't these guys suffer ammonia poisoning like any other invert? I can't really do water changes on this tank since I'll probably be removing eggs and/or baby triops if I do that.
So here's the plan: I have an extra air pump laying around and one of those Lee's plastic box filters that just uses regular filter floss. I've got tons of filter floss in various tanks that's already well seeded, so tomorrow I'm going to run out and buy an empty 10g tank. I've already got gravel. I'm just going to fill the 10g, toss in some water conditioner and the filter with the seeded floss, and dump in the contents of the triops aquarium a few days after they've hatched.
Any foreseeable problems with this? And is it really necessary to continue using distilled water for evaporation top-offs as the instructions say? I know distilled is necessary to get the eggs to hatch, but I'm guessing it suggests distilled for the top offs so that people don't have to buy water conditioner for their tap water.
I wouldnt move the triops into a bigger tank untill they are at a size where they will accept the pellet food included in the kit. I believe that they et their food in the initial days/week from the teabag which will only treat a limited amount of water so if you move it all over to a bigger aquarium (10 galons is quite big for triops) then the teabag along wont do the job and so the triops may die due to this.
the instructions say that after about a week, the triops should be big enough to visually see. this is about the time that you begin doing i think water changes at this time with a tiny turkey basture are dropper of some sort.
Hmm ok. There are only two of them that I can see, and they are now maybe 3-4mm in length. I still haven't set up the 10g. I'll wait for them to break 1cm before I do that. Thanks!
