Snails for my tank ? Which ones ?

Hey guys,

I have a 27G hexagon so its a very tall tank and about 20 inches wide as well and based on what I read snails will like this type of tank.. Now my tank is all planted, I have only 2 fake plants left for some color and the rest of my plants are a giant amazon sword a big anubius. 2 smaller wisteria and 2 small java ferns, and 4 of some bamboo looking plant with pink/purple leaves.. It isn't bamboo but its stem looks like it.. Oh and I have 2 marimo moss balls..

Now I have never really had an algae problem in my tank, brown algae will grow on the tank walls if I don't clean it, but usually the walls get cloudy before that happens the driftwood I have in tank tho has a little green algae on it.. I just upped my lighting from 0.5 watts per gallon, to 1.0 watts per gallon so im sure algae will probably grow faster and I tend to have the lights on for like 15 hours.

Anway, the only local fish store in my area which I have been shopping at for 20 years now has ALL kinds of snails.. They have Nerites I think they are called ones with black and yellow strips on em.. They have assassin snails, and mystery snails, and I think maybe 1 other species.. Now I love the way the assassin snails look and I understand they are snail killers... But I had to get 3 of them.. I want more tho.. I decided to get 1 mystery or I guess its called apple snail.. Its a Yellow one and quite large compared to the assasins so from what I read they will probably ignore it unless they gang up on him..

Im thinking of getting 1 or two of those nerite snails too.. What do you guys think ? Or will my assassin snails kill them all ? I have seen the Mystery snail ride right overtop of my assassin snails and when he does or he gets close to touch they tend to come out and look for him but they haven't ever caught him and like I said hes just so big compared to them. The assassin look cool but I hate how they always hide..

Oh and I should add I have city water in Virginia, and its very hard water tends to build up calcium or some kind of deposits on the shower heads and so forth, and the PH in the water is 7.6-7.8.. I use driftwood in my tank tho and the PH tends to be more in the 6.8 range.. Is this too low of a PH or it ok since the water is hard ?

The assassin snail will kill the Nerites for sure. So I would not get any as long as you are keeping the assassins.

Even if they are adult sized ? They are just about as big as the mystery snail I have almost ? I dunno I love the way the assassins look but man all they do is hide they usually hide in pairs by my driftwood since I have gravel I guess they cant bury themselves like in sand but still.. Maybe I should remove the assassin and see if I can find trumpet snails they look like assassins don't they ? I dunno

Well maybe I'll get a little fish tank, or put the assassins in my 30 Gallon long tank.. My mom tho doesn't want snails in her tank in fear of them reproducing lol but I don't want to kill the assassins.. But I don't like how they never move around and just sit there hense why I want to get nerites and keep the apple snail I have

Throw assassins in the 30. They look cool and I haven't had any baby boom from my assassins. They will eat the nerite snails. I accidentally (blonde moment lol) threw one of my assassins in the 75g with my nerites. Didn't notice till I caught it eating the nerite later that day...it was a nice sized nerite too. Grabbed it and tossed it in my 16 where it was supposed to go.

Well our 30 gallon is still being treated for ich with rid ich plus and it says it isn't too safe for invertibrates... What I did was put them into those little "sick" or breeding floating containers.. You know what im talking about ? With some rocks and I put the lid on it.. Im leaving that floating in my tank for now..

We just got a 5 gallon tank for a Betta fish... It doesn't have a heater, or bubbles, or pump... I know beta's are hardy but will the assassins be ok in that tank ? It isn't cycled or anything just regular tap water and new rocks... I used prime to remove the cloramine obviously but I dunno if I should stick em in that tank or the 30... but for now im gonna leave in my tank in that little jail cell of theirs..

At the LFS I also got 2 Zebra looking Nerites and 1 tiger one with spots on it, and I also got 2 smaller spiked looking snails I believe those are nerites as well but they have spikes on their shells.. Oh and I think my assassins were breeding.. I noticed when I pulled them outa my tank two were like stuck to eachother and they were like that for a few days.. Lol.. Those small spiked ones tho their shells don't look to healthy I have a big chunk of coral outside could I break a small piece of and grind it into dust toss that in the tank for some calcium ? Or do you think my hard tap water is enough for that ? I gatta watch out sucking my rocks now.. those small spiked ones are almost the size of my rocks... lol good thing my rocks are blue though lol

Assassins need a heater because they are tropical snails, your betta can go in to your 30 gallon with no problems. I have my betta with a female 3 spotted gourami, neons, rasboras, yoyo's, and corydora's. I have found that only the dark colored betta's get along with other fish more then the lighter colored betta's.

This thread has kind of gone a bit off track. My advice would be to leave the betta where it is, and put the assassins with it or in the 30 gallon or return them to the store. Then you can safely add Nerites.

This is what I did.. Since Im using rid ich+ in the 30 gallon, and it says right on the bottle to not use with invertibrates im keeping them in my 27g but in a little floating hospital thingy I dunno what its called. see pics below

and these are some of the new snails I got.. you can see the smaller spiked one in the background :)

Will assassin survive a cycling tank ? Mine in my little container in the picture's have been mating and I noticed a few eggs on the bars of the floating prison I made for them.. So I don't want those eggs to fall down in my tank and hatch and kill all my other snails.. And my 30 gallon tank is still going on with meds for ich so I cant put them in that tank yet.

The 5.5 Gallon Betta tank has been up and running for 3-4 days now.. It has rocks, decorations and the Betta in it.. I also got a LED underwater light strip which has a bubble maker built it and I got the bubble pump for it and I decided to get a mini aqueon 10 gallon hanging filter/pump because the water started to reek after the first day.. I checked the water param and my temps are 74-76f ammonia is 1.0, the nitrite is 0, the PH is 7.0-7.2, and the nitrate is around 5 which is what the tap water has.. So the tank is still cycling.

I had to toss my mystery snails in the 5.5 the meds will kill them in the 30 gallon, and the prison I made for them in my 27g hex was working fine until I noticed eggs everywhere.. So yea.. will they be ok with that ammonia ?
