Question Snail shell losing colour

Hi, i have a couple pond snails in a 5 gallon tank and the other day I noticed that my oldest snails shell is starting to deteriorate. Only the top layer of the shell is deteriorating, and there are no holes. The pH of the tank is within the normal range, therefore I think its a water hardness problem. How can I fix this?

p.s: None of my other snails have this problem and I want to prevent it from happening to them.

I've always heard that snails need calcium to keep their shell from deteriorating. You can buy a cuttlebone at any petstore (they are made for birds) and break off a piece and put in the tank. Often if you have hard water, it has lots of minerals in it already, and this is usually a problem with tanks that have softer water.
