Snail shell chipped.

I finally found this guy under an ornament when I cleaned today. I noticed this HUGE!!! chip out of its shell.I know it was not a fish, they are still small. This had to have happened within 7 days, the last cleaning was sunday last week, and it looked just fine. Here is a good pic of the snail.Any info is appreciated.

Also..These 2 snails are usually together on the glass most all the time, but the brown one has lately been hiding.

thanks,
--- BRIAN

Any pics of its front profile? I'd keep it in slightly cooler water to slow down the growth and allow the shell to thicken. Use calcium enriched foods and calcium pills such as Tums.

Wow, that's some damage. It can still be fixed by a new growth although the growth line becomes permanent there but that's just aesthetic. What's the temperature? Keep it at 74 degrees Fahrenheit. This should slow down its growth to allow its shell to thicken first. Are you dosing any calcium? You can calcium chloride by Kent. It is a liquid calcium and should be diluted as it can burn the snails.

Use the flavored Tums (minus the peppermint) daily by dropping one tablet per day. They take to anything sugary. If you can find Caltrate (without vitamin D added), it'll work better.

I can just toss in a Tums with my guppies and things will go fine? Does this raise the PH? My ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are all good but I can't seem to get my PH to rise enough. I've been adding API PH+ slowly over the past week and it hasn't even helped to raise the PH a singe point.

Tums is calcium carbonate so it'll increase both the KH and pH. Once the KH is increased, pH stabilizes.
