I saw very little if any sick or dead fish in the tank. One of the employees really knew what he was talking about as well. I'm not saying the petcos are bad (some are pretty decent) I just think it is ironic that every fish I bought from petco died and all my fish from petsmart (minus one who was dragged down by an introduced fungus) are still alive and thriving.
I think it's interesting how much the stores vary in how good the customer service is and the knowledge of employees is, depending upon your location :) I know I've always thought of petco as cheaper and not as well maintained alternative to petsmart. Now I have pet store not too far from me called Aquarium guy fish and pet store (or something Along those lines) the fish looked pretty healthy and were in decent sized tanks without being very overcrowded. Next time I'm in the area I'll have to check them out and see if they have any guppies or bristle nose plecos that I'd like to buy.

It's very true not all stores are the same. However I've been to the local petco here, and the one up in MI near where family leaves (two in that state) and all three locations have left a very bad taste in my mouth. I've never been impressed with their selection. The ones in MI I had to leave and wait for everyone else to be done because I got so angry I did not trust myself to be in there.
Bags floating in tanks that had not been opened in what looks like weeks, stuffed with poop and dead fish, and yellow brown water. Saw an expensive and rare salt water fish that had been dumped into a fresh water set up that had comets in it. Eel was gasping for breath dying...it was disgusting.
The other one was not much better. Most fish gasping for breath, many dead, signs of dropsy and ich. It was terrible. The local one is better than those two but I just...cannot bring myself to buy fish from there. Or anything from that matter.
Both Pet-smarts that I go to here are much better with usually very healthy fish. Good selection, generally knowledgeable staff. Sometimes you get people who don't know what they are talking about but that's why you do some research yourself.
