First off, what kind of crab are we talking? Freshwater or Brackish?

Next off, always introduce crabs to a cycled tank, as they are just as vulnerable to ammonia and nitrites as other fish.

Yes, you would want a lower water level for crabs, and then you want a ladder type thing, or ramp, that they can climb out of the water onto something they can bask on.

Why kind of crab exactly are you looking into? If I know, I can refer you to some specific tank set ups and great websites.

Fiddler Crab are brackish, so make sure you know how to deal with salinity in the water that they need.
