I think I'd just restrict the child from touching the tank for their safety. Remove the ornament with paint peeling off and do a water change as a precaution.

One more thing, Could the Temperature i had the tank at have killed the snails? it was at 80 F

Dormancy behavior at that temp? No. It makes them extremely active but they also suffer a very short life span. Lifespan for diffusas is only 2-3 years.
