Mystery Snail

I recently removed my mystery snail from my tank and temporarily put it in a tupperware container. The plan was for it to stay in the conatiner overnight and till around 5pm the next day when it would be transported to its new home. I didn't fasten the lid on the container I just layed it across with small areas exposed around the corners. I went to sleep and woke up in the morning and went to set a cucumber slice in the container for him for the day. Well when I looked inside there was no snail. I searched for 10 minutes around my room and couldn't find the snail anywhere and finally had to leave for work. When I got home fearing the worst, I continued to search for the snail to toss out his decaying body before it started to stink. Finally I found the snail about 10 feet across the carpet from where the tubberware container was. I knew for sure the snail was a goner it looked terrible and was dry as a bone. But believing there was an outside chance, I set him back in the water and went and ate dinner. When I came back it was racing around the container like nothing ever happened! Has anyone ever had something strange like this happen to them?

As long as the snail stays damp, it will survive for hours and even days. This is why most snails are banned from exports and imports in various countries and even USA.

Last December 2008, I had one blue mystery snail that I forgot was still in my mail package after five weeks. It is lucky that I don't immediately throw mail packages. I was looking for some spare tissue papers to wrap some egg clutches when I decided to check the old package. I saw a lump of tissue in the corner of the box and when I opened it, I was shocked to see one snail lying in there. I placed her in the tank immediately and after a few hours, she went off scooting around like nothing happened. Until now, I still have her.

Just happened to me today. I was replacing cucumbers in the tanks and was thinking I haven't seen Gary in about 2 days... (Only the big snails have names thanks to my daughter) Larry was in his tank, but I searched all over the tank for Gary. Gary's tank is a heavily planted tank, so I reached in and started moving plants around. No Gary. So I checked the sump tank, still no Gary. I looked behind the tanks and then started scanning the room. I found him on the opposite corner of the room. Apparently he climbed out and once on the floor the cats found him and decided to play ball. He was dry and hard. I thought for sure he was finished. But I remember reading that they can last out of water for some time so, with a little hope I placed him in a cup of tank water. about an hour later I was getting ready to put him to rest when I saw a little piece of antenna sticking out from under the shell. I then placed him in the tank and watched him come back one little piece of antenna at a time. By the time I left for work tonight he was racing around the sides of the tank doing victory laps.....I couldn't believe it.

I have cats and I found this story hilarious!
I'm glad Gary was able to recover from this game of hard ball.
