Well Lupin - you were absolutely right about my Betta and the snail. At first he was just curious about the snail - then I caught him picking on him. I removed him from that tank and added him to my 5 gal where I have some danios and an algae eater. He seems to be doing well, and the other fish don't bother him at all - except one time I caught the algae eater sucking on his shell. Anyway, my question is how to do keep the water hard enough so the snail shell remains hard. I thought I read somewhere about using a Tum tablet - but I don't know about that. Any advise would be great.
Thanks
Lori
Caltrate or Tums will work but Caltrate is less messier as it doesn't cloud the water. Find Caltrate with no Vitamin D added. What are your pH and KH right now? I also use plaster of Paris pucks to help with the water chemistry and shell growth.
Bettas are very poor tankmates for snails. They do have a tendency to pick on the snails damaging their soft tissues.
What is the ph, kh, gh of your tap water. Where I am from it is all really high just naturally which causes it to be perfect for cichlids which I keep 10 mystery snails in the same tank as my cichlids without any problems.
